I suppose some people will like that because they can get the BMW look at a Suzuki price, but it just seems like an unfortunate sell out.
Suzuki invented the beak with its DR750S way back in 1988, they're just reclaiming what's theirs...

On the new V-Strom, are heated grips in some kind of option kit?

Yes. There is an option called "Heated Grips".

My immediate reaction was ... its beautiful ... then my second reaction was ... its speed bump challenged. Someone is going to solve this but it would have been nice if it came stock with a more utilitarian stance with protection for the oil filter, pipe and O2 sensor. My thinking is that it would/should have been more like the stance of the versys.

Walking around the show, I came across quite a few bikes that looked lower than they needed to be. Its almost like for 2014 everyone decided this was a selling point. Flat foot sells! Dunno, but it sure seemed like it to me and I would hate to think the new strom fell victim to this thinking. Progressive and Race Tech ... are you listening?
Possibly catering to the growing number of female riders??

14K is a bit stiff for me, looks like I might just stick to my plan of going with a used 2011 or older Wee and building it to my liking.

Looks like it is already available for the Canucks:

Wonder why it's gonna take Suzuki four more months to get their thumb out of their ass and bring it to the States?

They may be waiting for CARB and EPA certs.
Remember BMW with the 450X? They screwed up and missed the first year, couldn't sell it in the biggest market in the country (Cali) and it killed the bike. It got shitcanned and sent over to the husky division, became the 449/511.
Now Husky is with KTM and there's not a street legal bike in the lineup for 2014.

There is no way that this pricing is gonna hold on the new Vee. Either the Canadian pricing will rise or the US pricing will drop, but no way that these will sell in the target market if they are priced more than the Canadian units.

Unless Suzuki knows something more about the 2014 economy than I do.

All things the same as 2013, I think that Suzuki is gonna roll out some attractive incentives to lower the price in the US.

their inventory [current] is just sitting...... aging... costing them more in floorplan. '11 and '12 dl1000's, 12 and '13 weestroms. I see that a few dealers have "blinked" and are trying to unload the 650's in the -$7K range [ditto roadie tiger 800's]
just guessing from the traffic here on ADV and Stromtrooper, and lesser sites: as decent as the Wee 'refresh' is, it has not sold a lot of units in the states. F800's and Tigers still going out the doors, I imagine that the Tiger 800 sales and the few Tenere's have all but satisified the "non-BMW ADV" demand, such as it was

Pretty cogent analysis of the current market, although I think there is a baseline demand for the Wee that is pretty solid - it's not huge, but its very solid. A little like the KLR. I honestly don't think there will be a whole lot of cross-shopping between the Wee and new Vee, any more than there is much cross-shopping between the R12GS and the F800GS. The 800 Tiger, Wee, Versys, F800GS, etc. will compete in one segment of the market; this new Vee will compete with the big GS, S10, Explorer, Stelvio, and KTM Adv.

I don't think price is the critical thing with the new Vee. What I'm worried about is lack of gizmos, particularly the lack of an electronic suspension option and cruise control.

Good point, and I agree. There doesn't seem to be a whole lot of cross interest between the DL650 and DL1000. Even though they're so similar they're still seen as small and large bikes, respectively.

probably right. I think [no figures] the dl1k interest in the past was limited to usa and uk... dunno about canada. i don't see lots of commentary from eurozone outside of uk and the dl1 had emissions issues etc.
i had higher hopes for a major wee respin but it was mild and ill-timed with triumph executing pretty well close on its heels, and with a long lead-up to the release that caused would-be shoppers to 'freeze'

suzi needs some really, really exuberant early adopters and more than a couple of high-five first-look reviews on major websites if they are to make this one pay. I have a friend that is a dealer.... now that the price is out I need to ask him how much room they're giving the dealers

I personally don't think that the price is way out of line for what you are getting. That said, if they could have maybe trimmed a little of the electronic wizardry and shaved the price down to $9999 or even something like $10799 I think they would have have created more excitement.

I think the price point missing in this particular moto segment is the around $7-$8K range. Kawasaki would be wise to facelift the KLR now and keep it in that price range with updates such as ABS, better suspension and a dash that isn't from the late 70's. Also I wouldn't put it past Yamaha to throw that new triple into something for this market to challenge Triumph & BMW. A baby Tenere in the $9K-$10K price range could do well.
