A few guesses:

- It was some rider quote a few posts back that said it was something like 42 degrees today? Vapour lock?
- Or maybe he banged up his skid plate on the left side (which hosts the fuel pump)... Perhaps the weird placement of the fuel pump down there as discussed in the Honda thread is to blame
- Injection problems from dirty fuel? Hmmm back to the PGM_FI drawing board

I haven't heard of anyone else having fuel quality issues today (yet)

I don't think there's a chance HRC will be honest if a problem is some juicy mechanical oversight. "Fuel issue" is as vague as PR men can do.
If they can blame it on the rider then maybe will know.

Number 48 and 51 still making steady albeit slow progress at the back of the pack. Don't know why but I always find it facinating to keep track of whoever is in last place each day...they get alot more for their money than the others who are just flying along, ignoring the scenery, etc

Honesty is a bit different than providing the competition with an insight into your weaknesses. This is the exact reason why every F1 mechanical failure is blamed on the gearbox unless smoke is billowing out of the exhaust.

Rally Morocco Update: Helder Rodrigues assumed to be out of the rally. Did not make it to CP 1 (reported fuel issue), no finish.

Helder Rodrigues declarations in portugese (my transl):

"This was a very important stage in terms of the overalll classification. Unfortunately a problem that we believe is fuel related made me stop and I had no chance of sorting it in the field. The next pilot to come by me was 14 minutes behind"

Helder also declared that he expects to race tomorrow assuming a hefty penalty.

"tomorrow we will restart the race betting on the continuation of our tests with the Honda, at a competitive rythm, aiming at next Dakar and fighting only for the stage victories that are left"

"After my stage victory yesterday, today was a bad luck one. At km 17 of the SS I had a problem in a wheel that forced me to go back to the beginning to change it. When I got back into the special there were a lot of pilots ahead and a lot of dust that rendered very hard to regain positions"

Even though (by and large) we like the Coma and Despres, the idea of seeing HRC (and others) competing seriously with KTM is obviously exciting to us.

But if you're HRC, even though you'd hope for a perfect run on perfect bikes, what has happened is exactly what you'd want: whatever can go wrong needs to go wrong NOW, so it can be changed for the Dakar.
