Admittedly he is not an alien yet, but he was ahead of Sunderland, Aussie66 & I were having a bet there.

South Africans Curtis and van niekerk not doing badly at all 6:22 & 7;37 Respectively. Much faster than me....

Defdinately looks like Marc is going across the smaller dunes straigh towards the Merzouga waypoint ... Mudboy seems to be following... but Helder is going further south (down around what is known as the "House dune" (which is the backdrop to Merzouga) and staying on the hard pack terrain... longer... but faster? and no chance to get stuck?

If Bluebull does one of his screen dumps... the f5ers at home can see the layout...

Now the idiottrack shows Helder has diverted (a bit later) and has cut across the dunes - like Coma and Despres did... all three out the other side now, back on firm fast going!

Yip, they are all skirting to the east of the main dune field and then cutting across the narrow gap.

Helder I think went the same route as the others.

We need Mischa Visser to look at the Iritrack positions, compute the timestamp offset, sort an average speed from the riders ahead and give us a corrected real time estimative ranking! And an app to get this on the iPhone. Now. We need it now.

The labelling of idiottrack and demands of the F5 team not even 2 hours into the first stage. Ah, its good to have the crowd back.

Actually it not so bad. Here is Gonclaves, stuck briefly near the WPM, I htink all the riders are going past this point. If you look now you will see Barreda there and Gonclaves ahead and moving. So its a bit of a 180, and a little zig zag through the southern part of that merzhit/whatever dune field.

They are not cutting due west accros but first going SSW and then NNE before turning east again.

Chaleco looks a bit lost?
He turned around before entering the Erg.

Nope they're all going that way, I think there must be a WP there.

There were four or five of the front guys who all went down pretty far (south) before changing heading into the dune field.

But the "master" Coma, was right on the money (and first on the trail as well)...

Talks of a "new" breed of alien my well be still a bit premature methinks... flash new bikes and top speed on the bomb runs is one thing...

Coma is one of the few that is (still) a cut above the rest at navigating in "open piste"... If there is a special stage called "find a needle in a haystack... in a sea of sand dunes"... you know who my money is on...
