Question Winter storage

Do any of you 2 smoke riders do anything special to winterize your bikes?
I just got an 1980 IT175G and don't plan on riding it over the winter.I was thinking of just draining the fuel and running it until the carb was empty also.I had one of these back in the day,but back then I rode it year round.

Will not be riding it until March-April.I don't want the carb.internal's gumming up.
I run racing fuel & Klotz bean oil as my pre-mix.

I 'woulda loved one of these when I was young. Liked them the minute I saw them, must have been in Cycle World. Rode one briefly years later on a spelunking trip in Mexico. Someone in the party had stashed a couple of dirt bikes in a small village and I had the honor of riding the IT175 from the village to our campsite.

Like dhallilama said, I usually go one richer on my main, and maybe one richer on my pilot depending on how it is running down low.

Exactly!!!! The hardest time is waiting for the lakes to freeze up so that I can throw on my ice studs

I don't do anything except ride it anywhere that I can, even if that is just an alley rip behind the house chewing donuts in the snow. But I guess if I was going to park it for over 4 months, I might drain the float bowl and top up the tank, but I would go stir crazy if I could kickstart for that long

Bought an RMX a year or two back and had no idea about mix ratios and jetting etc. You get every opinion under the the sun and guys who have raced for years saying different things to each other.

Found two excellent articles on the Interweb that I believe answer the questions, I just tried to search for them but no luck.
This guy used to work for oil companies in the labs and sales and in particular was discussing the old BelRay 100 oil and 100:1 mixing.

The significant points, in particular for those not racing/ rebuilding all the time.

32:1(or better) is where you get the best mechanical protection, not lubrication but a cushion between mechanical parts...longer life.

32:1 (or better) is where you get the best compression due to sealing the rings....more power

He goes on to discuss the viscosity and flashpoint of oil which is the reason people can mix in higher ratios and get away with it.
Motul 800 is nearly twice the viscosity and flashpoint (where it burns) as Motul 700. Don't quote me on the actual numbers but it is a huge difference between the two.
If you do not get your engine hot enough (perhaps it's too rich or maybe you just cruise) the oil will not burn and hey presto it comes out the pipe with the unburnt fuel as spooge or sticky gum next time you tear it down.
There are significant risks with 50:1 60:1 ratios but little gain unless you are at the pointy end of racing.
Less oil ends up left behind in your motor and poor mixing can result in parts of the fuel having no oil at all.
If you use 'heavy' oil measured and mixed perfectly (because there is less room for error at 60:1) then thrash it for 15 mins in a race, then ok.
That same mix held open for an hour up the hiway could slowly run you out of oil in the engine and boom.

His message for the average rider.

Use as much oil as you can in a properly jetted bike.

A bike that runs perfectly at 50:1 can be rejetted to run just as well at 30:1 or even less, there are no prizes for seeing who can use the least oil. If you bike is pumping out spooge it is mostly becaus it is too rich not because you put some extra oil.

A properly jetted bike will reach a temperature hot enough to combust the oil whether at 30:1 or 40:1 etc
If you don't race, or ride in the sand hills then use an oil with a lower viscosity and flashpoint with at least 32:1 (there is a reason why the engineers specify this as stated above) and experiment with your jetting to add even more oil.
I think it was the same article where he shows a video of his old PE400 with no visible smoke, clean pipe and just general trail riding with 25:1 fuel.

remember this is not my advice but from a guy that worked in the labs and in the sales side of the business as well I believe.
I thought it was a unique article because he gave the logic and reasons behind the approach without getting into circumstantial evidence and magic ratios for certain bikes temeratures etc.
