1989 Yamaha XT600 starts right up and runs well for an hour or so, then suddenly dies with a slight backfire, and must rest for 20 min. before she'll start again. shop recently rebuilt carb and valve job. sound freakish? normal? any and all advice appreciated...

Sounds like the coil is on its way out. Once they get old, they are prone to overheating - then need a break to cool down.

If it is the coil, there should be a test for primary and secondary resistance.

Coil,CDI or ignitor. Start the bike and using a heat gun (gently) warm the coil and see if it stalls after the coil gets hot. If it doesn't move down the line and check reaction to heat. Don't overdo it,you'll kill a perfectly good part if you over heat it.
you don't see luggage racks on a hearse..........act accordingly
