I am planning a one year ride of the USA starting in June 2013. I had only planned Baja Cali next winter, now, thanks to this amazing ride report, looks like Zipolite is on the itinerary for Xmas 2013. ![]() Thanks Dave

I am loosely planning, shipping the bike to Miami from Buenos Aires at the beginning of March. Airfreight is pricey but very convenient. I hear that when it is all said and done shipping by boat is not that much cheaper. My wife has a work related course in Atlanta the first week of March. I have friends all up the Eastern Seaboard. In March it's typically much too cold to ride in NB but I could slowly make my way north and leave the bike for a month or so at a friends place and come back and get it. My in-laws spend the Winter in Florida and as another option I could store the bike there and get it when NB warms up. I don't want to sell the bike. After riding it all this way I want to keep it, even if it is just a memento in my garage. The bike still has a lot of life left in it though. Who knows there are likely more trips left in it. |

Cuenca
I took a walk around Cuenca today and took a lot of pictures so you can all see how beautiful this old city is.
This was the scene outside my room this morning. It appears to be a place where larbourers go to meet contractors that have work ![]() The Cathedral in the morning light ![]() A look around Cuenca, Ecuador ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() A better look at my Hostal ![]() The Barber Shop ![]() I stopped and had a haircut and shave from this fine gentleman. The royal treatment. He spent about 35 or 40 minutes fussing over me. He charged $5 I gave him $10. It was worth all of that to me. He had the most beautiful ballroom dance music with a Spanish flair playing. It was an unforgettable haircut. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() There are dozens of beautiful churches here ![]() Ecuador! ![]() ![]() One of hundreds of nice Hostals ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() If you were to come here on your bike and had trouble finding a place with secure parking. There are many Parquederos here. Public 24hour parking, that is reasonable ![]() Park all night for $2 ![]() If I had some way to get it home I would love one of these fine hats ![]() ![]() ![]() Check out the wooden scaffold at the top of this steeple. It has to be close to 200 ft up ![]() This is the front view. The scaffold was on the back of the left steeple ![]() There was a fire or accident down this street. Lots of Policia on their bikes and Bomberos (Firefighters) in their trucks ![]() A sculpture on the side of a building. Look to me like maybe a union promotion ![]() The great building go on and on. ![]() ![]() Yet another fine church ![]() and another ![]() and another ![]() Cuenca has some nice parks ![]() Inside the big cathedral....magnificent! ![]() Across the street from my hostal. Pots and pans for sale in several stores. You see this a lot in SA makes me think I need a pot ![]() ![]() And finally, while I was out walking, Trusty the KLR was waiting patiently in the restaurant, getting ready to go to Peru ![]() Now you've seen Cuenca. What do you think? Kedgi Kedgi screwed with this post 01-08-2013 at 01:03 PM |

Loja
I am getting ready this morning to ride to Loja Ecuador. It is kind of wet and cool here this morning with fog in the mountains, and Loja is 200kms south, through the mountains. I know 200kms doesn't sound like much but we'll see how it goes.
If I spend the night in Loja I'm fairly close to the Peruvian border and the road from Loja is a big descent to the border. It's nice to get to borders fairly early in the day if you can arrange it. Talk to you from Loja Kedgi |

New fees at Argentina Lands Borders
Hey Kedgi,
I have been enjoying you RR since the beginning! You're doing a fantastic job - thanks!! ![]() I think you're also following JDown's RR, but just in case, crashmaster mentioned this thread http://advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=854270 by csustewy regarding new fees when entering Argentina by land. This other thread as more specific infos for Canucks like us : http://www.horizonsunlimited.com/hub...-borders-67957. In short: ** For Canadians the $75.00 fee is valid for multiple entries from bordering countries for 3 months. There is a $150.00 option that is valid for multiple entries for 5 years ** This need to be confirmed, but thought I would relay the head's up anyway. |

FWIW, Cuenca is being touted as one of the hot spots to retire. Perpetual spring, good healthcare and low cost of living. From your photos, it looks like a pretty attractive city. Quote:
