KTM 530 EXC. Your thoughts?

Just recently sold my 640 Adventure and looking for a more trail orientated option - kids are into mini bikes and I want to spend time riding with them etc... Keen on the KTM 530 EXC and believe it would be a good 'all-rounder' for day trail rides as well as the odd over night trip. not wanting to 'adventurise' it much.

Took a fellow inmates 530 out for blat the other day and it was pretty impressive and shows just how unfit I really am

So, any 530 owners out there?

Shit, I have now, that looks fantastic... Nice one mate

I've been told both the 450 and 530 are much the same, weight, ergos etc... except for power of course. Do you think the 450 would be more 'usable'?

They are a great unit, as for the the question 450 or 530,
I am old style and love steering with the back wheel, so the answer for me is the 530.
They can use a little bit of oil in the engine sump as these motors have a separate engine & gearbox sumps, all the blokes who I ride with who have them just check the engine level at the start of each day but on these rides we only do 180 - 250k's in a day so bigger days travel might need more diligent checking
They are quite happy putting around with the kids as well as going for a decent fang, but can boil if ridden too slow for too
long so the accessory cooling fan might be needed
Either way you wont regret getting one

Realistically, the 450 is more usable and rider friendly. Forgivable is a good word.

How often do you have to change the oil in standard trim and with cooler?

The 530 is more comfortable for longer distance, carries less revs as gearing is taller. Its also more economical and will pull someone your stature more easily Richard. I'd go the 530.

Yeah but the sprockets are different. The 530 has the torque to use higher gearing.

The 530 is a much better "allrounder" than the 450. Mega torque down low, a mid range that just keeps pulling and smooth and fast top end.

I had a similar idea, a trail bike that can do mini adv rides. Cush drive rear wheel (RAD, excel, stainless spokes), 12 and 22lt tanks, ohlinns dampner, comfy seat, acropovic, bashplate and rad gaurds, rear rack ect......but a crook back and other things going on i've hardly ridden it.

Iconman, If you decide you want a 530 then let me know, I would condsider selling it with all the extras.
