Out of state title help?

Trying to fund next years Trials riding for the offspring starts early,
I am liquidating all my toys that I haven't touched in years, problem is Way back when I never had title to half the stuff.
In the land of overtaxing and Illinois, They want way to much for bonding titling taxes etc to make it worth selling these things...
I have a 1976 Honda XR70 and 76 XR250, looking on selling to afford next years trials cost for my 2 offspring, need to start early because this is when most trials riders are updating their stuff..
I looked at a few title company's online, still way to much $$$
Is there anyone out in ADV land that knows how to get title in their state at a reasonable cost?
I would be happy to compensate, just cant see giving it to the state for nothing......

Any help would be greatly appreciated....

For grins, you can try going to your local PD and have them run the VIN to see if an owner shows up. If an owner does, you can see if they are still alive and if so get them to sign a lost title form. Then you can supply the signed lost title form with the vehicle. There used to be a power of attorney or similar such named form, you can see if those are still available.

Heck, you used to be able to buy a 24 hour transport permit for $5 so you could drive a purchased vehicle home,but I think they stopped having those.

My title guy has a thread here.I have also posted there about doing a free stolen VIN search.It can be done from a smart phone if you're looking at a bike and want to know right then.

Did you start with searching your IL DMV website for title info? In many states a vintage bike,esp., can get a title with a bill of sale,including KY.That means that for bikes old enough your buyer may be able to get one anyway? Also look into a "sale" on paper that gets the title back to you. The hitch here, for that, is the sheriff has to do a VIN inspection in person.

Some states regard a signed off title as valid to get home on. MI does, but you better have proof of insurance also.

Of course, at least in Michigan,these bikes never had a title, only a bill of sale back in 1976. They were considered off-road models only. You might get one for the 250 XR in MI with a 152 conversion form. The 70 will be a lot harder. I know this makes them hard to sell. In MI they understand vintage bikes at many DMV stations and will issue a title if you have good documentation. Same with lost,old titles.

It would depend a lot on whether or not the bike's VIN was the long unified one that's used now. Those will show "off-road only" when they're punched into the database. Once upon a time, you could go to Canada and buy a Yamaha RZ500, ride it back, and get it titled here.

Both came back as no response, so they were most likely never titled.
The 70 was from Michigan, I have owned it for 20 years, saved it as I knew it would be an awesome bike for any kids I planned on having.. well who knew all the cool stuff they got now, and snub this poor little xl70.....
The 250 is a bike the local police bought new, they used it a few time for patrol, not much after, They ( The police ) said never had title, or an MSO, and sold it as parts only.
Sop if our Illinois DMV wont help the Police, ........No way in hell am I getting anywhere..
Just want these easier to sell without some moron beating me up for price because NO Title.......
Most likely gonna do the Vermont thing..............

The MI bike wouldn't come up on the system if it hadn't been plated since the computer system was started. They never bothered to put all of the inactive data in.

What I am saying is that you could title the 250 in MI with the proper work on it and that 152 form signed by the police. It would have a MI title and you could get plates for it. I think you are just hit on the 70 though. No way will an officer sign a street legal 152 form on a 70 around here. I do see those ridden around here with a scooter under 5 hp sticker on them but that does not settle your title issue. I think a buyer understands that it was never sold with a title in the 70s and would accept a notarized bill/sale if they are reasonable. That $89 that Vermont charges is outrageous.... In MI a title trf is $12 and your plate is $23.50. You have to remember that if you plate, then you need insurance first. Not so cheap.
