Years ago the board had grants available that might have been used for tables, cover and restrooms like haystack. The final thought was leave it primitive the way we found it. The thinking was if we improve the area and make it nice others might find the value in San Ysidro. We are a small group , almost any other activity can beat us up with just shear numbers. The only reason the cables and bounderies exist were the nationals we have had there. Every national permit brought another archelogical site inspection.

This strikes me as a very worthy point to consider. I gather that you get the stink eye from a few folks now... Advertise how great the place is and those folks will potentially lawyer you right out of there.

It started out a little sketchy, but the day turned out great!

At the top of the hill just west of Bernalillo.

For pics that show dirt and rocks, we will have to wait for Curtis to wake up.

OK...here's a few from yesterday's practice at San Yo.

Gordy at the SY gate.

Pit area...a little snow but not too bad.

Got the bike out and went up canyon a ways.

Big Al getting crazy right off the bat.

Clark picking lines through the rocks.

Me trying to balance the scales.

We must have worked on this silly turn for an hour...looked easy, but kicked our butts!

Lastly we got out of the bowl and up on the dirt hills...a bit muddy by this time after some snow melt!

Stupid me believed NMRoads.org report of "snowpacked and icy, snow blowing across the highway, hazardous driving conditions" on NM550 and skipped it.

Well it is winter! It was a blast to practice in wet conditions and get a feel for that. We had to ratchet it down a bit. The wet sand packed into the tires and tracked onto the rocks made for some memorable moments.

During my year as board president I showed my fellow convicts a proposal I had done as a student the year before. The idea was to apply for some RTP (Recreation Trails Program) grant money for a vault toilet and picnic pavilion to be sited in the old windmill area. BLM Danny liked my proposal, but RTP grants come with the caveat that the projects approved must be available to multi-use and the sponsors must bring equity to the project like in-kind contributions, cash, and/or sweat equity.

The board decided it was too much work to try and get everybody on the project (start of poor turn-out from economic cave-in) and we were suspicious of doing too much to improve the area at the same time as the permit and MOU were up for renewal.

I still have the proposal--it would require an update--but the entire club needs to commit to something of this scale. Upgrading the kiosk was done in coordination with BLM Danny, but I think we could probably get away with some improvements to dress it up and improve curb appeal.

Sometimes it's easier to ask for forgiveness rather than for permission.

Edit: there are some other grant-funding orgs--Yamaha and Polaris come quickly to mind--but Yamaha hasn't imported trials bikes since, what 87? and SY is not open to ATVs or side-by-sides.

Bad News, Everyone!

It seems that Warning Citations were issued today by APD at the Beavertown parking lot for "Riding in a Closed Area". According to the citing officer, "A closed gate makes it a closed area". Miss Bitters and I (along with several others) were out riding and did not get the warning citations, but found about them later.

Boffo. Not to point fingers, but I think the littering paintball eejits that have infested (and literally thoroughly trashed!!) our wonderful "close to home" practice area over the past few years have finally raised the ire of the surrounding landowners. Dammit....

I would say it happened for such a large crowd. It is after all private property except for the easment. And that belongs to a land grant association.

I was asked by an APD officer not to unload my bike one time there, but that was probably 3-4 years ago. I just took the trials bike to Cedro for a few hours and rode single track! Cheating!
