Big Al and I had contacted our newest NM elite rider and asked about some "advice" on the fine art of trials riding.

The weather was crap anywhere around the Rio Grande Valley, it had just flooded in Roswell a few days earlier but we all agreed to give it a go.

We lucked out with a small window in the weather and met Ray Peters and his wife Laura for some training at Haystack.

Al thought that his 4T was making this up too easy so he jumped on Laura's Sherco and basically rode right up it from any point.

He did get us up it no problem as a one throttle zap. Did you know that there are about 4 different types of zaps? I do now and also know that I'm not very good at any of them!

He is very patient and went into a lot of detail on the dynamics of what the bike is doing.

He kinda looks disgusted in this pic.

Here he is telling Laura, "look up and go!!" I don't know how many times that I heard that!

Ray had just rode up this wall and was thinking of going down.

Click on pic below for video

It was a great weekend and I know that we learned a lot. Now...we just need to practice and apply the principles that he teaches. He will tell you that this doesn't come easy and be prepared to invest hundreds of hours and many years to figure some of this out. So there you go.

A good friend will take you trail riding, an ADV friend will double back and say, "how did you get down there?"

Thanks, Gordy and Laura and Ray!

When I started riding trials in Arizona, there was Ray Peters. Six years later I see that Ray moves around, but he sure keeps riding. Arizona had a LOT of talent then. Things evolve, people come and go. There is reason for optimism -- it is rumored that ol' Chainslap is gonna bike up again.

How can I make Roswell?

I'm thinking a big, pre-Roswell practice at San Ysidro on the 29th so Gordy can teach us all he learned. I don't want him to have any unfair advantages in Roswell now...

Plus we need to see if there's any flood damage...

We spent a day and a half frustrating Ray and he knows what he is doing. I have no idea how to re-teach something that I am only beginning to grasp, but riding would be cool!

That's enough reason right there for a ride!!

Gordy' playing his "I have no idea how to re-teach all the tricks I learned from the master" routine so he and Al can whoop on us...it's all good...I'm getting good at getting beat. Sportsman's looking pretty good these days!

sooo you are planning on kicking my ass???

why don't you just stay in your own class

don't we have a rule that only one rider is allowed to move down at a event.

BS and more BS. I just ride where you guys tell me to.

I didn't even know that you counter-steered a motorcycle until I read it some where a few years ago.
