Flinders Ranges 2011

G'day. This is a long overdue RR of a soft ADV I took last year. I've been mostly day trippin' on a lighter trail bike more locally of late, so my contribution to ADV is overdue. I had been to the Flinders a couple of times in the past by moto and 4WD and decided to combine them this trip. The advantages were my girlfriend could come along to see what all the fuss is about (and where the hell I go each winter) and I wouldn't have to carry all the camping gear on the bike.

The route would basically follow that of my previous trips, with an eye to keeping it simple as I coached my beloved through the sandy sections over the radio. Old RR here:

Planning was the proverbial piece o' piss: gear in the Jeep, bike to car UHF rigged up, fuel in the tanks and we were off. We trailered the bike from Hamo to Mildura, then hit the dirt. It was Raelene's first outback camping trip but she was happy chit chatting on the UHF, listening to ABC radio and watching the wildlife

First night at Canopus, then outside of Yunta. Next morning exploring the copper mining ruins to the North

Saddle sore yet?

Going my way???

After larking around, it was on to Arkaroola. Longish day but dry, easy track in much better nick than when I drove it last year. Clouds over the Gammons:

The late afternoon run to Arka never fails to disappoint

We hung out there for a couple of days' R&R. Took a couple of trips in the Jeep out to some of the gorges:

Most had seen some flash flooding recently but the dried mud had left some interesting scenery

Prawns, anyone?

Snoozer!

After leaving Arkaroola, we meandered back down through the ranges. Chambers Gorge was first port, where we spotted some rock wallabies

and in the morning a herd of feral goats.

Then a whistle stop at the Blinman pub

Thanks for washing the car, Raels!

before tenting out in the upper Aroona Valley. Great sites, great sunset.

We then headed lazily down to Rawnsley Park Station via Wilpena. As a side trip, we took a flight out over Lake Eyre. Kinda touristy I know but it was a top day out.

Wilpena Pound

We could fill an album alone with pics from the plane. The aerial perspective of the Flinders Ranges

dry desert country and the old Ghan line, then Lake Eyre itself was totally worth the outlay.

The return leg back to Mildura was cruisey, save for a rear wheel blowout on the bike. Got it fixed but Raels was treated to nothing short of my full repertoire of expletives during the process. Two rimlocks on a D606 might be overkill. Craddock pub verandah

Murray River reflections at Renmark

One dusty DR, two happy campers!

There's a bunch of us (5 or 6), riding up from Adelaide on Wed 14th Nov and stopping at Angorichina, for 4 nights and riding the PAR's.. If you happen to be there the same time, you're welcome to join us.
