The only ferry I took was the alaska marine highway, which I made a reservation for, about a week in advance. You probably don't have to do that, but I don't know how long you'd wait in Haines without a reservation.

Splendid! What a treat while recovering from a cold!

Loved every pic, every post! Thank you for sharing your journey with us!

I always wondered how far back this forum saves the RRs.

Awesome Account

Thanks for your entertaining and informative (as well as inspiring) record of your adventure!! You are one of a kind! Hope you get some corporate $$ someday. You've got more street-cred than anyone I've ever come across.

I hate to bring up something so old but snowrider, you are epic in my opinion. I've driven to, from and around alaska/canada a lot in my truck but my dream is to do it on a bike. I just recently got myself a cruiser I may attempt the ride on(never on my sportbike) but I've always wanted to do it on a simple dual sport with the dr650 being my top choice for years. I guess I just have to save up some more now and try and snag a good deal on one and set it up. Then comes the when and which bike to take the trip on.

Rock on man.

Ha! Just saw the reference to this thread in the September issue of Cycle World! I just finished reading every post. Great RR, Snowy! Tell Peter he should join advrider so we can enjoy his writings as much as we've enjoyed yours!

Had to read over 300 posts to get to the money shot (money post?)

http://www.advrider.com/forums/showp...&postcount=304

I'm sure this thread will be revived now, eh?

Yup, so probably all the pictures are about to stop working.

I read Egan's article this morning directing me here -- outstanding post!

I plan to be there next year at about this time.

Snowrider, Great ride and great report. Did the ride from Texas to Fairbanks and back in 03. Will do it again soon. Nothing like it.
Cheers

You've got a good pal in Mr Egan. Please thank him for me for turning so many on to your journey. I loved the read; witty, insightful, engaging prose capturing the more enjoyable characteristics of a Neil Peart travelogue. Congrats for making it happen!

Well done, but... you're messing with my peace of mind (or is that piece of mind?). That KLR, comfortably simmering on the back burner for so long, is percolating to the top of the short list again. Of course, for it not to simply enable a poser's life, ideas must morph into plans. And, as anyone married with children knows, a good 5 year plan starts with, "Sweetie, I have this idea..."

Hey, great writing. Got the reference from Cycle World (Egan), like so many others. I have a DR650 in the stable, but took the G650GS to Alaska this year. The DR would have allowed me to go farther on the Canol Road and others. Maybe I should return. Once you've been to Alaska, you never really leave.

Gday Snowrider, I have been lurking on advrider for a while now and I've just finished reading this ride report. Your ride report was very entertaining. I'm also thinking of getting a DR650 and I reckon your DR experiences are helpful for anyone looking at purchasing one. Cheers.
