Joking aside, not all engine bars are the same, and not all bashplates are the same.

Walter notes that Dakar bikes don't run engine bars, and that's true, but they generally run bashplates that are inches wider than the cases - they are doing the job of engine bars. Here's a close-up of a KTM450RR - click. Good luck damaging the cases on that.

There are certainly some ridiculous engine bars out there. Here's some for an XT660Z - click. They do a nice job of protecting the grey plastic panels (which are actually cheap and designed to be 'expendable' protection for the fuel tank), but absolutely nothing to protect the casings.

FWIW, my Tenere has the Yamaha option bash plate and engine bars. They were cheap because the previous owner paid for them , and I think offer about the right amount of protection - keeping the casings off the floor but not going any higher. If I had to start from scratch I'd probably just fit a bigger bashplate and forget the bars, but bashplates cost money as well.

Rod - as a member of the Commonwealth, I get the context of the photo...(beyond the poof thing)...

But there's just the teeniest chance you may need to explain that to other North Americans.

Walter for your bikes the crashbars might not be needed, i agree.

And yes for the 950 adv are necessary. I had a lot of crashes with mine and been saved. The first time i crashed it (in paved road), without the crashbars, the fuel tank broke. I have also seen boxers braking and leaking oil.

Now where is that BAM road and ROB???????????

Love the setting Rod. It's instantly identifiable even to those of us blessed to live in the Southern united States.

However.... is that really you? The glare off the subjects pate is so harsh that it could be anyone.

I've already buckled the rad on my 690 a couple of times. I think it's quite vulnerable! Nothing the folks from rally raid didn't build a dandy fix for..

But what's a poof? Can someone please explain that to this poor redneck?
