Steve changing tyres and bearings

Well I said earlier that Steve hadnt ridden a bike before 3 months earlier, so it follows that he had never changed a tyre or wheel bearings. After a bit of chat and the lend of a couple of tools, Steve was going to have a go at it.

I really admired his attitude. Steve was a guy who was going to have a go at anything. We were in Zhigalovo .... a dusty out of the way village in the middle of the Siberian forest, a days or two's ride north of the Trans Siberian Highway, about to tackle the BAM Road, and Steve was about to change his first wheel bearings and his first tyre.

And if you are wondering why there is a touratech luggage strap around his waist ... its cause he lost so much weight since beginning travelling, that he needed to keep his riding trousers up.

My Birthday

The day off was my birthday ... and once we had the bikes ready to go, we grabbed a few beers and headed back to our hotel. The mechanic who helped us with some work earlier also joined us ... bringing a bottle of vodka ... and his guitar. It was a birthday singalong ...

I always seem to have birthdays on the road ... in dusty one horse towns. Such are the sacrifices of adventure motorcycling ...

Steve proved to be a very handy photographer ... so much so that once we got on the BAM, (coming up shortly), I gladly surrendered much of the photo taking duties to him.

Hi ,
just a short bike question: looking at Terrys bike in one foto it looks like he is on the original rims the x comes with.
Ok the front is a 21" but that looks like a x challenge wheel. Can one of you give details to that, please. And if the rims are standart how did they stand the beating?
Thanks for your answer.
Nice report by the way. Really enjoying it.
Cheers Thomas

Terry's front wheel, as mentioned, is a stock 21 inch KTM wheel with an Excel signature rim (not all KTM wheels use good rims) - so its pretty tough.

I cant recall but think he had custom wheel spacers, and or axle made up. Terry? enlighten us?

Yes stock wheels

Kinda tough enough to survive in some cases but not in all cases - stay tuned for details as they emerge
