It could also be that the fan was stuck according to the above thread?

What rear shock were you using? I looked back and couldn't find in the thread...
Also.. after the fact.. was it a small failure or something worse? AKA is kaput or can/could it be rebuilt?

Absolutely correct buzzy... This was the problem on my bike. After washing the bike and getting the tip from Niall I found out that the fan were stuck. Just by cleaning it and making it spin freely again solved everything and the warning light never came on again. This is a good tip to bring for the F800GS riders out there - check the fan if you get this kind of warning!

I use Hyperpro which I reckon are about the toughest high performance shocks out there.

No the failure was routine wear and tear - it was just the oil seals

Guys.

I know you're impatient for the next instalments from the Vikings, but please bear in mind these guys are posting complex updates in their second language whilst holding down day-jobs and running families. I speak French quite well but to compose even an Email in the language takes 3-4 times as long as it does in English, so when you're getting antsy waiting for the next post please cut the guys some slack. It's a huge labour for them-and it's always worth the wait.Thanks....and apologies if this sounds a little schoolmarm-ish.

If it's a seal only, I wonder if it is repairable en-route?
You need to carry a spare seal and a tool to open up the shock, C-wrench or pin-wrench?
Some lightweight oil can be found everywhere.

If you can fix it up enough to last a week, you'll be home free.

WOW! What a story! Thanks to all of ya'll ( you all in common english I think ;-) ) for all the time and effort to share this incredible journey with us that will never see it in person. And for all the lesson learned about Hard Core Adventure riding.
I've been on the road putting up with bad weather and it gets harder as I quickly approach older ages and the body says uncle. But comes a time like when Forest Gump finally stopped running across the US from coast to coast and Say's, " I'm tired now, I think I'm going home." Then with your worn out bikes, they have done all and more that you have asked of them. Your bodies and mind followed suit also.
Still, everyday, I'll look for updates to this thread to the end. Again, THANKS Big Time.
