Cherokee County, OK

Cherokee County sits in the foothills of the Ozarks. The county seat is Tahlequah (a cherokee phrase meaning-two is enough). Tahlequah is home to Northeastern State University and the Cherokee Nation Headquaters. The scenic Illinois River is great for conoe and rafting. The river flows into Lake Tenkiller.

I spent a lot of time in the summers of the '70s riding around Elk Creek, and Cherokee Landing area on a Honda XL 125. Of course ATGATT consisted of cut-offs and sneakers. But I had a lot of fun hunting bikinis.

Meeting a semi on that old "lane and a half" bridge was quite a thrill.
The apple dumplings with soft-serve ice cream were legendary, but I can't remember the name of the drive-in, just South of Elk Creek on 82.

I'll have to dig through the family pics to see if I can find something to scan and post.

I still keep a eye out for bikinis, the old bridge is gone thank God, and the drive in is still open and more popular than ever...The Princess Drive Inn.
The north end of the lake is great! I live in Keys and run a store and restaurant on the south end in Paradise hill.
I remember the good ol days when I would camp at Cherokee Landing. Something about camping you begin to draw a crowd, suddenly have friends you never knew.

Then one up the road towards Cherokee landing that I haven't seen open in years then about a mile from there on the hill is another that is open parodically with the rock out front

According to some internet sources the meaning of tahlequah is unknown and legend of "two is enough" is dubious at best.

I've heard of this for years but never talk to anyone that actually know the location of Mr Ed's. How about directions, my wife would get a kick out of this.

Ok, the restaurant with the big rock out front has been closed for years now. Patty is keeping Big Red's going strong. Across the street from Big Red is the Indian Road. It's a great ride now for color but keep an eye peeled for deer. Follow the Indian Road south beside the lake and 15 mile down you will come to a stop sign. Turn left there onto Highway 10A for one block and there is B & J Restaurant and B & J Quik Stop. Have another Restaurant in Tahlequah open 24 hours...across from Walmart.

Nice thing about a small town is you can cruise up to a gas station in a untagged, no lights smoking 4wd and have the deputy sherriff come out and shoot the shit

i was in hs and i was out at light horse (not under the bridge but the cut off road next to it, tried to follow my buddy in a vw over a gravey pile.,

Theres a old set of rail way tracks up in the woods if your willing to hike....

gideon, actually slid off the road at my buddys granparents home, my buddy was down visiting from tulsa at the exact moment this happened

Maybe when i come down next weekend ill cruise through thequah, took my gf a couple weeks ago to rock baths (or rock slides) then down eldon hill

since your in cherokee county, not many people relise there a monk monastery in clear creek do they, ive been there, inside th church definately interesting

Cool. My mother went to school in that building in the 1930's. She lived in a log cabin in what is now the wildlife refuge. I showed her this picture today and then listened for about 2 hours while she reminisced about walking over the mountain to school and her friends and life in general when she was a child.

She is now 86. Seeing that pic brought her a lot of joy. Thanks for posting it

Some of my ancestors also attended Qualls, last name Walker.
There is alot of history in a half mile stretch of road.

It's at the intersection of 82 and Moodys road. It is directly north of the house and west of the garage in the second pic. The house is vacant and for sale so no real need to ask for permission - at least it was when we were there this summer. The monument is laying down in tall grass so you have to walk upon it to find it.
