Without the fixed landing gear, he might have slid that baby along the river in Hudsonesque fashion. I am surprised that this is the first mishap in this racing series history.

Yes it will if it was designed with a large enough rudder.

It's called a knife edged pass... roll 90, hold topside rudder, forward stick pressure and plenty of power.

I've watched the video several times... looks like he completed two alternating 90 degree knife edges, then slightly overcorrected on the third one. Watch the nose as it falls off... he did a good job getting level and nose up prior to impact.

Wings

Don't some of these aircraft have drastically clipped wings?....I seem to remember seeing a few pics of them with really short wings which, I think, would be problematical in 90 degree turns at high speed.
In the vid, it's pretty obvious the a/c just drops out of the sky in a stall.
Glad the pilot survived in any case....sad to see the loss of a good aircraft though....

Check out this video taken from a camera mounted in the vertical stabilizer.

Notice that on the third maneuver, the pilot tightens the bank beyond 90 degrees. As the nose fell through the horizon, a high sink rate developed. At low altitude, he could not recover. He was successful in leveling the wings and getting the nose up enough to allow the tail of the aircraft to strike the water first. That saved him.

High wing loading can degrade turning ability. But these type aircraft are designed for optimal performance. However, by their very design, and at such low altitude, error can be magnified.

You'd be surprised by the survivability of small aircraft crashes.

Today, another guy bounced is aircraft off the surface after exceeding 90 degrees in his bank. He recovered from his stall and landed without further incident.

Video is available...
