Husky Kennels in Alaska
My wife and I are headed to the Great White North next summer and she saw something a couple of years ago where you could tour a sled dog kennel, play with the puppies, etc.
Anyone know of a place where we could do this? Can we even do this? My Google-fu isn't strong; I don't even know what this stuff is called.

Type this into a search engine such as Google: "sled dog kennels alaska" and you'll get many prospects from which to choose. If you're going to be riding up, there is also at least one musher near Whitehorse, Yukon who also gives summer tours of his dog lot.

I would add to Jack's advice to do some research on any potential kennels before you sign-up. There are some slip-shod outfits that abuse the animals and do not provide good service, A reputible kennel will have references, professional memberships and perhaps even a record of competitive accomplishments. Enjoy....

Are you on the east coast?
As in Charlotte, NC (from you profile)?
If so, I highly recommend this guy in Vermont. My wife did a dog scootering session with him and two of our dogs last spring. It was a blast and this guy is all about the dogs. http://www.peacepupsdogsledding.com/ He also runs dog cart rides in the spring and fall if it's cool enough. Dog sled rides in winter if the snow flies. Marc Hampton, VA

The sled dog kennels at Denali National Park are open to visitors. The dogs are really friendly, and there 's a demonstration with a sled mounted on wheels a couple of time s a day.

Thanks guys. I found ididaride.com so between all these it looks like we'll be able to find a place when we get here.
Knowing my wife and puppies we'll be at all of them.

And if you're in Juneau (and have a lot of money
) you could go here: http://www.alaskahelimush.com/My friend Libby Riddles, 1st woman to win the Iditarod back in '85, used to work there in the summers. She lives in Homer now so keep your eyes open if you're around there. Have fun, Mark H. |
