Nikon Coolpix P510?

Seems to have some impressive features and on sale at the mo' over here. I like the idea of the good zoom but it's still not a huge or complicated camera. I'm no photography expert so don't want to have to carry lenses and be some sort of camera expert to drive it.

Appreciate your thoughts - especially owners of the gadget.

After my experiences with Nikon, I would never buy another. They seem to be made of glass and are expensive to repair. You definitely can't have them bouncing around in a bag. On the flip side, I've had nothing but great luck with Canon cameras both still and video.

Also had bad luck with Nikon. Will not take any kind of drop for sure.

Hmmmmm, interesting. What ever I get will have to survive sitting in my topbox - offroad and on.

Any suggestions for something relatively comparable? Once again it has to be easy for a moron to operate and I don't want to carry lenses etc. Also keen on USB charging (that the Nikon has).

Only a few can compare to a ........Nikon AW100 for rough/tough, waterproof , drop proof, dust proof etc........and takes great pics,but it does not have a super long zoom like the P510. Nikon P7100 is a pro series but then your back to not a tough/rough service box.

Other manufactures make tough/rough service cameras like the AW100........then it starts to be an oil thread on opinions and likes and dislikes. AW100 has built in GPS which is not critical but a useful feature if your in to documenting a location. There is a huge range in price and quality.

Looks like a great camera, gets good reviews on amazon, zoom WOW.........but its back to not being rough or tough service compromise..........which if backed well and cased could be OK. There are literally 100's of good to great cameras all with some compromises along the way.

I have the Nikon P5000, a predecessor, to the one you are considering. It can be as easy, in automatic mode, or as complicated, in Program mode, or anywhere in between. It was in my tank bag for 15,000kms with no issues. It was a great camera to learn how to use all the controls, at which point I upgraded to a Nikon D90 DSLR.

Hmmmmm, just saw the Nikon for even cheaper up town...it's about $250 cheaper than what I paid for my current Olympus 4 megapixel, 10X zoom nearly 8 years ago (BTW: it's been a fantastic camera and takes nice pics, I'll continue to use it).

I may wait for the Boxing day sales and see what else is out there. There seems to me a lot in the price range: Fujifilm, Canon, Samsung, Sony, etc...

Still keen to here opions from everyone. I want a reasonable zoom (it does not have to be 40+), don't want to carry extra lenses, would like USB charging if possible and GPS tagging is something neat that I'd also be keen on.

You can't do better than a Canon S100 for a tank bag camera. Highly recommended.
