2004 DL650/SV650 engine swap questions

I have a 2004 DL650 with 80K miles and it's getting tired. I've found what the owner of the engine states as a "2nd gen" SV650 engine and it reported to be low mile. I can't remember the exact year or I would state that but like I said, he stated it was a 2nd Gen SV650 engine.

Can I swap this engine into my DL without issue? I know I will have to use my throttle bodies,,,, any of things like differences in stators or the like? I only have a short time window to pick this engine up {it's cheap} so any help would be greatly appreciated.

From what I have read on Wikipedia and such (as more of interest than need), the engines are the same - but, the cams and torque/HP curves are different. The DL650 engine was tuned a bit differently from the SV650. The engine dimensions and fitment are the same, but (although I am not certain) I think the cams and fuel injection are different on the DL650 engine. You should ask this question in Beasts and over on www.stromtroopers.com and http://www.vstrom.info/Smf/index.php - Good luck!

Edit: corrected website link

Thanks for the response. I've posted it to stromtroopers with response but no definitive "yes, it'll fit". The other link is dead though.

I know the cams are different as a know hp mod is to swap either the SV intake or exhaust into the opposite side installed 180 out in the DL. The SV TBs are larger and I would be keeping the DL's so I wouldn't have ecm or fueling issues.

Wow! Tired at 80,000 miles? What gives you that idea? Just your gut feeling, or is it giving you trouble? 80,000 miles is nothing on these bikes.

I've got well beyond that on my V-Strom, and I've got no indication that it's "tired," other than it uses some oil, which it has done for about the last 75,000 miles.

FWIW, I have no experience, but I've read a few threads and my understanding is that while it's possible to graft an SV engine into a DL, you'd better be willing to put time, money, and effort into the process.

Understand the engine isn't on it's last legs or anything. On the other hand, it's been rode hard and put up wet. It's been run out of oil {as in the oil pump sucking air} on two occasions when the countershaft seal failed while riding {didn't notice till too late}. Figure the engine probably is getting leakdown from the valve seat area as any engine would after 80K miles. I can tell it needs a valve adjustment which is no biggie but hey, it is work, boring, mundane work too. Finally, the clutch adjustment is getting thin.

Those are all "excuses", fact is,,,,,,, I just wouldn't mind having more power. This engine might be able to be bought for 300-325$ possibly and I could do the intake/exhaust swap thingie along with some bowl work in the heads and I'm looking at a decent power gain for not a lot of money. For sure more power for less money than swapping the exhaust for example.

On the other hand, it would suck to buy the engine, yank the stocker only to find it's a cluster frigg of a mess.

I know this is an old thread…

Jud, did you end up putting an SV engine in your Wee Strom? If so, how did that project go?
