+1 I test rode a dozen bikes. Anything better than the 919 was out of my price range.

Bandits are also close but way heavier.

The FZ09 looks like a contender but will only have a 150 mile or so range.
The closest bike to the 919 I've ridden was the 1050 Tiger. It was twice the money and not as dependable.

Got my '04 a couple of months ago, it's pretty much the perfect motorcycle if you ask me. I'll be getting a 2nd one this winter and making into my touring bike.

How are you getting 200 miles? I ride 95% highway at a sedate 4800 RPM on top gear & I get 150 max before the light comes on. New plugs, new filter, fresh oil, new chain & sprockets. Ideas?>

Mine's all stock, I don't run real hard, mostly back roads/blacktops. The last tank I filled at 220 miles and it took a little over a .5 gallon. I'm getting about 49 MPG.

I will tell you this, chain slack/cleanness/condition has a huge impact on fuel mileage with the 919. More than any other bike I've owned. If my fuel light comes on at 150 miles, I know it needs some chain care.

One more plus to the 919, it tells you when your chain needs maintenence..

Yep. The greatest repository of 919 stuff is on WT.

WHAT!? Touring on a 919? Surely you jest.

I mentioned in my post that I installed new chain & sprockets so not sure what you are on about with the chain maintenance theory ?

My bike is all stock as well engine wise. Perhaps its because of the highway? Unfortunately there is no way to traverse 110 miles daily non-highway, otherwise my round trip would just double from 2 hours to 4 hours. I am going to an oil change this weekend & move to a lighter weight oil for the winter. Perhaps that might help. I was really hoping that I would get at least 45 mpg highway speeds. So far, I have gotten 41 mpg at best.

A small windscreen will help if you don't have one.
Inflating the tires on the "upper side" of allowed too.

+1 on the front sprocket would help too, just remember that the speedo
error changes so you need to ride slower then before to be actually riding
at the same speed.

Good clothes on a naked bike are important. Stuff flapping around doesn't
help. Do you have a big top box? If it's very big, at anything above 60mph
it'll come into play.

All those things combined and riding at 4300-4400 instead of 4800 revs
might get you the difference in MPGs you're after.

Or a NC700X.

I would guess it is the speed and RPM. Mine starts to get real thirsty approaching 5K RPM.

Same here. Mine gets 39 to 43mpg depending almost solely on my right wrist. Most of the time my fun meter sez it's worth the 3 or 4 mpg.

I got an incomplete National Cycle Street Shield cheap on ebay as a temporary measure right after I bought my 919. Two years later, it's still on the bike - so it must be pretty good. It's not too big and there's no buffeting in any position - ever.

That's great.
It might be even too big.
