The guy in the video is a HACK. Plastic rim guards with the rope leash's are the hot ticket for those of us that don't have a designated tire changing stand.

I'm headed towards a set of "Stubby" brand tire tools & stop fooling with rim protectors. Copper to protect rims? Sure, makes for a good bearing surface but will mar paint! come on...

Knowing what you're doing goes a long ways to saving rims/wheels. Along with the right tools.

They are nice. I did break one on a Oregon backcountry ride where we didn't have lube other than water. Sometimes I do need a bit more leverage and use the long metal ones, but have had plastic rim savers since 95 for both street and dirt. All done on no mar, no scratches.

Geee.. I just cut up a plastic soda bottle to make rim protectors.
PET plastic is incredibly tough stuff.. and slick, so the irons glide over instead of digging in.

I just use hunks of old garden hose sliced lengthwise with a knife.
