All of my favorite mountain passes are closed, so I just head south, fast and hard. Of course I didn't bring rain gear!!

 photo P1060151_zps4062a9b0.jpg

At 2,000 feet on hwy 155 I'm pretty sure I can't make it over the 6,000 foot summit today, I give up sooner rather than later for once.

 photo P1060152_zpsd4ccd233.jpg

I went back down to Woody and took the turn for Bakersfield, rewarding road with country I hadn't seen before, too bad I'm soaking wet and miserable.

 photo P1060153_zpsec16ba1d.jpg

Took 178 towards Lake Isabella, it's on the verge of freezing in the canyon too...slower traffic use turnouts!, I let everybody around me. It's not a road to mess around with, go down at speed in a right hander and you could easily throw yourself 1,000 feet into the river. Stopped at Nelda's for lunch and a warm up.

 photo P1060155_zps1a81caa2.jpg

My original plan was to make it to the Saline Valley hot springs tonight, but I'm still wet and don't feel like riding in the dark. New plan, get a bunch of firewood in Trona and find a cabin before dark!!

Gotta know where you're going!! Score!!

 photo P1060158_zpsbe41a3a4.jpg

I was very surprised to find no mouse sign, none, not even one turd. That's very strange, I wonder why? I'm sitting in the remains of daylight reading a book and something starts chattering at me, just having a tantrum!! Gave me a start, but I knew what it was as soon as I saw his bulging eyes...a Miner's Cat!! Also known as the Ringtailed Cat, I tried to get a picture, but he was too fast...fast enough to eat all of the mice in the cabin, thanks little buddy!!

 photo P1060160_zps70d1a2a3.jpg

I went ahead and slept in the open on one of the bunks since there weren't any mice. Miner's Cats are very reclusive and rare to see, so I didn't expect to see him back during my stay.

Long 16 hour day, goodnight.

Nice night of warmth from the woodstove.

I have plans for Saturday night at Panamint Springs Resort, something special, very special. So, what am I gonna do all day long? I know there is a gold mine around here somewhere, let's take a look.

 photo P1060165_zps500d7b8b.jpg

 photo P1060166_zpsbfe481be.jpg

Uh oh, right in the direction I need to go is a family of burro, Jack's can be extremely protective...even violent, I have no desire to get stomped to death by a burro and soon retreat.

 photo P1060168_zps183c3d6e.jpg

While high on the ridge I had spotted this hopper with a road going to it.

 photo P1060169_zps1b91b986.jpg

So, I grabbed my helmet and the bike to go for a look.

 photo P1060170_zpsb5d8ae74.jpg

When I got off the bike I heard a most terrifying scream of which I have never heard before in my entire life. It scared the ever living hell out of me!! I gotta quit watching that damn bigfoot show, it sounded like those silly screams and howls they associate with the supposed hairy man. I had brought a super nice pair of mini binoculars with me and soon located the source of the continuing blood curdling screams. It was the Jack and he was pissed off something fierce!!

 photo P1060172_zps58173216.jpg

I had to just ignore him while I looked around, it was very weird to hear his screams echo throughout the canyons. I had talked to a guy many years ago about how to get to the mine here and my earlier ridge route is the only way, but I didn't have anything to do, so I went to see where the zip line went to.

 photo P1060174_zps901edf1b.jpg

Gulp...don't fall, don't fall!!

 photo P1060175_zpsf4a3c9c6.jpg

Worked all day on my book and near dark I started packing up.

 photo P1060176_zps374eaa64.jpg

If you're gonna put trash in the burn barrel you should burn your trash so it doesn't blow away, come on people!!

Goodbye, Osborne Cabin...we're rolling...

 photo P1060178_zps36ad7ac9.jpg

I haven't had a good tumble in years now, let's throw ourselves on the ground.

 photo P1060179_zpscd6d1d8b.jpg

Gas is spraying out of the top of the tank and out of the vent on my little gas can. The rear tire is about 2 feet off the ground, great, just great. Can't even budge the thing an inch from the right side, scared to damage the right side valve cover, but I gotta get this thing back up right now!! I stood on the rear tire and when I stepped off it stayed on the ground, cool, picked it right up after that!!

Had a super nice dinner at PSR and finished up my book waiting for the 9 PM show.

So, we had to shutdown the bar and get the tables out of the restaurant.

There is going to be a film about the Escape Trail where they hike the route that they believe in. There is some controversy over the route they took in 1849 and my view is different than the film. Anyways...it's still cool to see places I will never hike to. This guys father was the driving force behind their film, but tragically he was killed on his motorcycle just a few weeks after they took the hike in the film...21 years later the film has been completed.

One of the other founders of the film idea.

William Lewis Manly, American Badass...don't forget Rogers, he matched William step for step in the rescue effort.

They are going to have the film for sale on dvd eventually on amazon.com, tonight was a premier slash critique. I enjoyed it very much, met some imaginary internet friends and had some awesome beer, but I've got a long road in the dark to the hot springs.

It took me four hours in the dark through the South Pass to reach the springs, I can make it in 1.5 hours on a 650..the big bike really slows me down, not a bad thing I suppose.

Last Beer Dan and Kite Bob came in this afternoon, gave them a hand with their tents in the wind and it sure was windy.
