Software alternatives to Mapsource and Basecamp(l
Folks,
I am running on a BMW Navigator IV and currently use Mapsource (tried Basecamp but given up and moved back to the older brother) for my trip planning. The software, however, has a few shortcomings as you know, like the inability to search for POis (like Gas stations) along a route, for example, which I find crucial. Does anyone knows/recommends an alternative that is better-suited for ride-planning? I need something compatible with Garmin formats, maps etc... Sorry if this has been answered before but I did not find anything searching. If I missed something, please point me in the right direction within the forum. Best Rafa

![]() Well, I don't know about Windows-BaseCamp, but on my Mac, I just select Advanced Search and set the criteria to search for FUEL POI's. I have my search preferences set to search a radius from the center of the "viewed map area". BaseCamp currently does not have a "Search along a Route" filter. It's been requested. All of that took less than 10sec. Doesn't seem to difficult to me.

Maybe your fuel stop POI was just an example however I typically don't create Waypoints from POIs within a custom route. Knowing where they are (fuel, food, rest areas) is my objective to select "on the fly" while navigating a route, so I have several categories of POIs loaded as "Extras" to all my Garmin units (two each - Zumo 550, SP2720 & SP2730) downloaded to my 'puter from http://www.poi-factory.com/ and then sent to Garmin units using Garmin's free POI Loader utility available here: http://www8.garmin.com/support/colle...t=999-99999-12

See your point in not having gas waypoints. I live in Brazil, though, where quality gas is not easy to find and as I prefer high octane just certain chains have it... Then planning refueling is key!
