Creative uses for worn out parts.
Over the years it seems I've amassed quite a collection of shit I can't use,
but kept it either because I thought it was cool, like a '68 guzzi oil pump; or because I thought I might be able to use it again, like a shock damper body. So, what to do with such things? I can only have so many piston ash trays, layshaft door stops, and crankshaft gear paper weights.

+1 on fleabay.
That dinosaur is cool too. Mostly I just throw it away or recycle.

I sort mine for stuff that's machinable - steel shafts and the like.
Stuff that's not machinable - such as burnt pistons, engine castings that I probably will never use. I keep the stuff that's machinable and tinker with it. The stuff that is not I bring with me to work, where a guy who works at another company in the same building takes my scrap. This guy does me solids like rounding up a crew of guys to move heavy stuff, for which I pay him, and he pays his guys. (yes hispanic). |

You can always donate them to the 24 Hours of LeMons (cheap car racing). They turn them into trophies!

I either keep the stuff for machining purposes or make ingots for future casting projects.

I keep the cool stuff for my brother who is a metal sculptor in his spare time, the rest goes to the metal recyclers.

I've made some jewelry out of small parts, and I have plans for a side table made from wheels and a liquor dispenser made from a gas tank. I'm all ears in this thread though, I have a little basement bar that could use more of these ideas.

Pistons from a wrecked CM400 engine were turned into votive candle holders. A 1" hole was milled in the center of the top of the piston, deep enough for the candle flame to be flush with the crown of the piston.
I'd post up a pic, but they were given away as gifts many years ago. |

Old handgrips are great to keep around for do it yourself rubber spacers or bumpers
