Oakland, CA, to Virgnia City, NV- Best Route?

Hey folks,

I gotta wedding to go to in Virginia City in late May. I'm considering taking Highway 88 (this route) out there. Has anyone done this? Any comments? I get somewhere between 120 and 170 per tank, with 130 typically being the reserve point for spirited, twisty or high-wind riding.

Anybody done this? suggestions? Is there gas along this? Any and all info appreciated!

I've ridden Hwy 88 many times. It's a beautiful ride and I highly recommend the route. Gas shouldn't be a problem if you gas up either in Jackson or Pioneer before you start across. It's only 75 miles across from Pioneer to Minden NV. Some of the best scenery in the country. Enjoy!

Greg

p.s. Take a warm jacket. It could be 85 on either side of the mountain but it will be cool at 10,000 feet.

I've done 88 - it's very easy going, scenic, and not too much traffic. Curvy, but you can keep the speed above 50 most of the time. Not something I consider twisty, but that's always in relation to speed ...

When I rode to Lake Tahoe last time, I took 130 over Mount Hamilton (THAT is twisty), then went to 132, headed East there, lunch in La Grange (I started around 9:00 in the morning), onto 49, 49 to Jackson, 88 over the Sierras and then it was 89 to South Lake Tahoe for me. Really a fun ride:

We did a similar trip last year and it was great. Always love to ride to Tahoe - so many great ways to get there.

As you head up to Virginia City via Carson City be sure to take the truck route up. The truck route splits off the main route just before Silver City. So you would be on Highway 50 through Carson City until you get to route 341 which leads up to Virginia City. Stay on 341 as it branches off to the right (342 will lead straight up to VC via Silver City and Gold Hill) and it will give you a curvy road to check out for a few miles. There is good signage showing the truck route.

88 is good road (108/4/120 are the fun ones) but watch the weather. 88 goes to 9000 and I've been snowed in, in June.
