Question for the experienced. How many days, at a regular pace, should I plan on taking from Tulsa west? I gotta be home for my mom's wedding late in september but want to cut it close, trying to figure out when I should fly out east (found a nice person to drop my bike off in OK for $100 for me.)

helpful thread!
I'm starting the TAT around aug 11, after the horizons unlimited travelers meeting in NC.
I'll be on a harley w/ sidecar, so probably goin pretty slow in the rough stuff.
Ive been reading the various RR's to see what I'll be getting into. It should be a fun ride!
maybe I'll see some of you pass me on the TAT!

Doug

RTW Doug - get the parade/police fan before you roll out. You will definitely need it to keep the engine cool. Love your choice of trail bike. Good luck!

Thanks Jarrod, I hadnt thought about one of those. I will look for one.

Doug

(edit) I just asked a friend who is a puter geek. PC cooling fans are 12v, and dirt cheap. I'll rig one of those up, & see how it does.

(I used to ride a KLR)

Fast is two days per state, slow would be three...ten days per state if you're on a stock Harley with a side anchor... , sorry Doug.

The nice thing is that you can unbolt that sidecar and ride the hell out of there.

Bring a spare, or two, in case the water crossings eat them up.

Check out how much air the H-D parade fan moves - WAAAY more than a KLR inspired PC fan would ever dream. I have no doubt that Mother-Motor (H-D) would want to supply you with one for a little off-road r&d.

TAT speed question

How fast is the fastest someone has ever done the TAT?

My buddy and I will be ridding the eastern section to Durango CO in September. We are planning to ride as light/fast as possible. I'm on a klx250 and he is on a crf250.

Any advice on guerrilla camping along the trail?

Any other advice on moving quickly and enjoying the trail?

PS: I know that moving quickly we will miss what the trail has to offer blah blah blah, to each his own. Sometimes we need to move quickly.

Thanks,
ETD

If you are guerilla camping, you make the rules.

All i can add is get off the road far enough in the bushes that a passing car doesn't see you. I've heard of people camping in graveyards, behind storage units. Once you get to Colorado a lot of small towns allow camping in the park downtown. Out west guerilla camping is the norm. Lots of extablished fire rings if you want a fire. If no campfire just pull of the road and set up. Most likely there is no burning out west this time of year anyway.
