Taken with a cell phone so the clarity isn't that great. But rolling into this scene after a very long day is not something I will forget anytime soon.

Howdy,

I guess it's pretty rare to find somebody who has extensive experience riding in Colorado and also in Southeast Ohio. Could you please compare/contrast the riding experiences of both areas? I really enjoy riding around McConnelsville and Athens, but I'd some day like to ride the Rockies. Thanks in advance!

That's a great question. Right off the top of my head I would say the scenery is the most obvious difference. Even riding the interstate (I-70) is scenic in Colorado. Don’t get me wrong, I think Ohio is just as beautiful but in a different way. Second would be the weather. In Ohio the temp is usually pretty even over the state. In Colorado you'll go through several different altitudes all on a little twenty mile ride. The air is thinner and with much less humidity. You notice the effects of the radiant heat from the sun more. It can get pretty cold in the shade. I would ride with my mesh jacket in Ohio and not worry about the weather. Now I usually dress for the coolest scenario unless I know I’ll just be riding around the cities or plains.

The roads I ride in Colorado change altitude a lot and have a lot of hairpins and switchbacks, even more so than the Hocking Hills area. There is more loose sand and gravel here than Ohio especially in the spring. I think for the most part Ohio’s roads are in better shape due to the frost heave in Colorado. There are exceptions as you probably know.

Traffic is traffic no matter where you go. During the weekdays you’ll find you pretty much have the mountain towns to yourself, weekends are a different story. The last couple of years there seems to be a lot less out of state R.V. traffic then there has been in the past.

I couldn’t rate the riding experience in one state compared to the other, they’re both great. Here’s a map of one of my favorite loops in Colorado. It’s from Frisco to Buena Vista and up to Minturn. There are dozens of roads and mountain passes that branch off this area.

Good luck and have fun when you get out here.

Thanks Brian, that's good information. One thing I've noticed over the past ten or fifteen years in Southeast Ohio is the increasing prevalence of dump-trucks and heavy construction vehicles due to the oil and gas boom going on down there. Seems like a lot more traffic overall. Very fun riding none the less...

I'm sorry to hear that. I used to be able to ride on a week day and only see a handful of cars. Good for the economy bad for motorcycling I guess.
