Question Chuck Stearns - Dakar 1985

Hi there everyone.
As almost every day i was looking to my Dakar files and get stuck in 1985. It was the only time that Chuck Stearns took part on Yamaha. He won 6 stages and finished sixth. All i found on internet is a mention of his death later that year. Can anyone provide some more information about this rider? His racing begginings, first victories, Dakar preparations, Rally Atlas in Morocco, whatever...

Chuck was a friend of mine. He was a member of "CHECKERS" a dessert motorcycle association in So. Cal. I stumbled upon your message and it made me feel really good about Chuck's success as a great motorcycle racer. His mom gave me one of his GAULOISES/YAMAHA riding parkas. I keep a photo of him that was taken during that race on my bookcase. Chuck was a really great guy, and I miss him. It's because of Chuck, that I continued my education and became a registered nurse.

Chucks Bike

Hi,

I found this blog and want to add some information about Chuck Stearns.

2 years ago I had the luck of my life and bought the original bike of Chuck Stearns on which he drove the PD of. 1985. Than I searched the internet and found a lets say report for a women writing about her life and also her sons, from whcih one was Chuck Stearns. I contcted Barbara by mail and it was a great surprise for her hearing from Chucks bike and me being interested in his vita.

All over the net nobody knows how he had disappeard from racing. He had 2 or 3 years before his ride in 1985 on the PD a crash and he got a blood transfusion, which was infected by HIV. Though he drove in January 1985 the PD, became seriously ill in March and died in October 1985. For me having this infection it is more that the 6th place he reached in the PD.

By now I am in contact with Barbara and we also once met in Europe where she has been for a charity event. I took the chance and drove to Turino Italy having a great day with here and my wife.

I start the bike 2 or 3 times a year for hearing the sound and annoying the neighors because it ha a megaphon exhaust an is loud like hell, I guess about 120 phone or more.

If somebody what any information I have, please contact me.

Greetings Henning

RIP Chuck Stearns. Typical of a Checker back in the day to have them on his helmet, even in an event like the PD. It used to really make me mad when the Rubby Gordon hype machine went on about how Rubby was the first American to win a stage. Most of them had never even heard of Chuck or what he had done years before.

Wow! Coolest dug up from the dead thread I think I've ever read, Sehr Schon Henning!!! I recall hearing about his Yamaha PD accomplishments via some sort of printed media back in the day, quite possibly from a letter from a cousin in Heilbron but maybe an American MC Magazine.

Thank you for bringing it back to the fore front!

Chuck

Hi guys,

yes there is a short video I can poste on youtube. I will post it soon, but for the next few days I am abroad.
You also find detailed pictures of the bike at Ingos extraordinay page:

http://www.rallye-tenere.net/Stearns...m%20Detail.htm

Today it is more complete with the start plate No. 79, the trip master which was missing, and some other decals.
There is still some work to do (wrong colour of the handle bar) and I have to drill the holes in the engine protectionplate.

I plan also to post a ride report with a friend of mine, we did this year Germany, Silk Road and Pamir hoighway on 3 Yamaha Teneres built in 1983 to 1985, 9600 km on the bikes and 5500 km with car and trailer transporting the bikes to Ukraine in 4 weeks.
I have a title, but we have to put together the story, and this is work for the winter month of January and February.

Greetings Henning
