Poor question.

You leave something else behind before you leave the duct tape, zipties, and a pair of visegrips.

Started carrying stainless steel zipties now as well as good nylon ones. Those SS ties will hold on all kinds of parts. Wired on pegs, exhausts, stuff that you couldn't otherwise.

Neither. Good Old electrical tape. But the two inch variety, or gaffer's tape. (more classy version of duct tape.

Then again there's this stuff:

I'm gobsmacked at how great the call ins are from this side, so helpful to be able to get a feeling from tone that is far beyond the words spoken.

Thanks, Nate.

PS: Working on getting a special caller lined up...

I would wrap a bundle of zip ties with duct tape.

That self-fusing tape is good stuff, got a roll in the kit.

2008 - Lined up for the aborted Lisbon-Dakar on XR250's - one badged "NEW MOTOR" and the other something else ( can't recall ), the bikes were as rough as guts, very poorly prepared.

2009 - Same 2 XR250's from Lisbon, but badged "JINCHENG" and better prepared, I don't think either finished and the Czech guy on the monkey bike rounded them up on at last one day. Just one support guy in a rented ute, several times later into the bivouac than both riders.

2010 - 2 Chinese riders on kitted Yamaha WR450's, nicely presented in red livery - badged as JINCHENG and entered as JC450's. ( I wasn't there personally in 2010 )

2011 - Same 2 WR450's as 2010, plus a western rider on a KTM530 - all in red Jincheng livery. The WR450's had all Yamaha logos removed but oddly, the KTM still had KTM logo on the clutch cover ( later in the rally anyway - maybe after an engine swap ? ).

2012 - I wasn't there, but only 2 bikes from memory, maybe one Yamaha & one KTM ?

2013 - One Chinese & one westerner on KTM450 Rallye's apparently ( I'm stuck in Oz ).

So why do they do it ? As with anything in China, you can never get a straight answer. I have met with Jincheng several times for an unrelated project and they are very proud of their Dakar team - when i asked them why they use Yamahas instead of developing something themselves, you just get a blank stare - like "Who told him we use Yamaha's...". So who knows, maybe they will come up with something of their own, maybe it will look not a lot unlike a certain Austrian Rallye bike ??

You can see the progression though, with typical Chinese logic - enter some XR250's, good reliable bikes - didn't finish.
Enter some Yamaha's, good reliable & fast bikes - finsihed at back end of field. Enter a KTM 530 with a western rider -
finsihed mid field. Enter the bike the won the Dakar the previous year.......
Interesting!

2 notes:
2008: i remember to see them at lisbon scrutenning and I'm afraid they were not real honda xr but a kind of chinese fake... Suspensions were very weak, definetely worst than XR oem

2013: today on france4: they admit it's ktm's
Chinese rider cant speak french, english, spanish... only speaks chinese!
