Props if he does try that, although that strategy must be kinda old by now

I'm definitely thinking a similar perspective, but going for more reporting in general. That is, not wrenching for anyone in the process, just being an independant reporter. (though I suppose being ned's man-friend could have benefits)

I can't think of a good example right now.

i understood that:

marathon was you couldnt change any major component i.e. engine, forks, swing arm

malle moto you have to do your own mechanicing in the malle moto area, you can take what you want and even have other teams carry your stuff for you if you cant get it all in the trunks as long as only you mechanic it and do it in the appropriate area of the bivouac
That's right - Marathon also includes the marking of certain key items, a number of which should be standard production parts too such as the triple clamps along with the fork outers (you can change the inner components), and swing arm, exhaust etc. - I am currently rebuilding my 2011 WR and am still finding little patches of gold paint inscribed with '173' in the most unlikely places!

Regarding Malle Moto, 'technically' you should only have the contents of your trunk/s and wheels with you, and carried by the organisation (Si Pavey's spare engine was packed in one of his trunks in 2011 - fortunately the right one that day!) - however, there is nothing to stop a Malle Moto competitor walking around the main paddock of course, and if someone happens to be carrying extra wheels and tyres that fit your bike for example, it would be foolish not to take advantage of that... ahem.

Certainly Malle Moto riders are allowed to visit the Michelin tyre truck, and get your bodywork patched up (Loctite were a sponsor in 2011) at their 'fibreglass tent' - and I'm sure noone is going to mind if you ask someone to weld something for you - but as a favor of course, just as long as it is not prearranged service, that is the crucial difference... (see the ahem above... ahem).
