I never liked this rule, but it comes with the contract.
he can't really complain about it - he made the choice to ride with ktm as a second rider, therefore he has to follow despres... maybe next year he can get the first bike with a team...

True, even if he shadows Cyril today -losing 2 minutes- he will still post a good enough time, and will still be in a perfect position to take over one of the two first tier positions if anything happens to Cyril or Chaleco.

Sounds like a good strategy to me

considering that it's quite likely that chaleco will get himself a bit lost, maybe it's the best strategy...

Privateer & rookie, spaniard Julian Villarubia #196 (met him in Albania Rally last year, great guy & damn fast) is doing his first Dakar on a Yamaha, is currently in 56th overall... his update from yesterday:

Today we toured the Atacama Desert and has been hard. The day was scheduled with a first stage to continue with a neutralized section and begin our second special.
*
Time changes has been the most traumatic morning. I have had to come to wake at 4 am quarter. The two hours I removed the clock not get along and when Spain switched to summer time winter!
*
In order to grab the stuff and ready to start the day today. During the first stage has been more or less well. From km 35 Rafal and I were together in the harsh dunes ticked him right navigation. Then came a very quick and do not know what the fuck is wrong with the Yamaha that every day we put something new thinking that it will give your 100% and do not give the correct key and as usual today ... failed and could not give everything that was for my boss and myself.
*
In the second half, still dragging the problems hopefully find out tonight because tomorrow is the marathon stage and ... I do wish to have options. And what is worth mentioning here that all the riders were already many problems with gasoline.
*
However and with that, my Yamaha with the number # 196 and I were in the 57th with a total of 4 hours and 36 minutes to 1 hour staying relentless Francisco Lopez. In the general climb to position 56, I think I have many more options but unfortunately for this Dakar will continue doing our best.
*
Rafal continues podium options, which after all, is our role in the Dakar 2013. Today was the seventh to 24 minutes of Casale and this leaves the third podium position overall.
*
Tomorrow in the marathon stage, I must remember to take the raincoat ... because during the 400 km liaison climb to 4975m above sea level and almost 4000 meters race. Here we begin to have problems both pilots as cars, motorbikes, quads and trucks ...

True... but in Argentina navigation is easier and in Chile he's in home, last months FB updates was all about hard training there!

I wonder if any of the carburated bikes will carry different jetting kits to change at the end of the liaison, or whether they have jetted them a bit lean for the liaison (dangerous) so they will be ready for thge high altitude stages.

I've scoured FB and twitter but found no info.

Could this be the day that EFI bikes trump KTM?

Before you can be classified as "The best" in any field of endeavour, you must first defeat others previously regarded as the ultimate in that field. Without TSC in the f5ield of competitors, the majority of the rest of us are merely competing as also rans There are obvious exclusions and it is up to thse other potential leaders in the f5dakar to lead us mere mortals to the rest day.

That is all

I´m pretty sure KTM has this all figured out. A well tuned carb is as good as a FI. I think it was in Lyndons thread where he showed how easy it is to pull the carb. My guess is, that the top riders can easily work on the carb and jet it differently if they have to.
