I was just taking a break, tending to some household duties, and a thought popped in.

The post-race interviews are wonderful. It's awesome to directly hear the riders thoughts on the SS's, the challenges, experiences, etc. However, I would also like to hear from them about their thoughts during the liaison stages. I've spent a fair amount of time alone in the middle of nowhere on dirtbikes & dual-sports outside my home country, albeit not in rally circumstances, and they were some of the most introspective & rewarding times of my life.

I'm fairly certain that I know some of what they're thinking about when "slabbing" during the liaison stages, but I would like to hear directly in their own words.

I dunno... it might be an American racing thing (RG uses it in almost every post stage Dakar interview he's done for the last five years), but the old; "If it wasn't for (insert random misstake or misfortunate incident here)... we'd be leading this dang thing...!"
A Polish racer friend would say something similar regularly. Not sure if he picked it up here or growing up there. Initially it has value but obviously, unless you saw exactly what happened, but then loses value when it is the norm when you don't win.

Definitely not a complimentary habit. Evaluation of what you could have done better to win or what may have hampered you is proper but doesn't need to be expressed. Self awareness would tell someone to phrase it differently if repeating it regularly.

But... if it helps him win there are worse habits he could have.

More then a few pro athletes (and other professionals) are pushing themselves so hard to stay at the top level, and are so competitive, they do not gel well in society (nice way to say "act like pricks."). I say this from experience.

Final tally of busted bones, L1 (bad), L5, T12 and a number of busted ribs ( but they don't count). So all in all a pretty lucky let off.

Faria is what, 39 this year - whilst he is riding great he is still older than both Coma and Despres.

Who knows what the plans are, medium term take established talent in their early 30's or young talent in their 20's - a bit of a balance really, but it is tough to get true racing talent young and then shackle it in the no. 2 position unless the rewards are there - these guys are there to compete to win, however they are also there to ride and make a living, so it must be a balance for them also

So Caselli's is a great effort no question.

Without going to the archives to be sure, but there are some other names who I think have taken stage wins as rookies at Dakar...? My guesses would be Kari Tianen (2004/05-ish?) and I think that Andy Haydon may have pulled one out back in 1998. Malherbe and Kinigadner were also freakishly fast in their debuts back in the 80's and 90's.
Troy never stops to amaze me. I had to check my archives just to confirm his thoughts.
We have some rookies with a stage win on the first Dakar - Faria (2006), Tiainen (1996), Jimmink (1995), Kinigadner (1992). There were some others who won either prologue or the last Lac Rose Stage (Walch including).
Haydon won two stages in 1998, Fretigne with 2WD Yamaha won one more in 2004.
But one of the greatest to ever enter Dakar was Chuck Stearns who won 6 stages back in 1985. True hero.

CP2 to the ASS took Caselli 40 minutes, and took Lyndon 54 minutes.

Figure an hour for Luis.
