Sooty buildup on carb nipple leading to charcoal canister

I cleaned the carb on my DR650 1500 miles ago. It was running rough yesterday so I took the carb off and the only issue was the nipple to the charcoal canister (CA model) was covered with black soot and needed cleaning. So, what's up? Does the canister need replacement? Or is there some other issue? I have read some posts where people have disconnected the tube entirely. Is that ok (mechanically, not legally)?
