'74 CB750.. The #$% did i get myself into?

Hey everyone,

Just picked this up today. 1974 Honda CB750 w/51000 miles and a title.

Well, for starters, I have no idea what I'm doing. I've fiddled with VW carbs and flat 4's before. I attempted a restoration of a '69 bug back in the day, but didn't get far because I figured I should do some time for Uncle Sam first, and make a buck or two. So far I've only made a buck.. currently working on that second :P

I almost got a running, plated CB550 but i really wanted something to keep me busy.

Engine's got awesome compression, and the carbs appear to be in pretty decent shape. Also included is a box of parts, a bag with nuts and bolts, wiring that's labeled, a tank that's ready for paint and and freshly re-upholstered seat. Some ugly some bent wheel spokes.

What's my first step?? Tear down, tear it all down. It's got to much crap on it; highway bars/pegs, hideous exhaust, passenger pegs. I'm going to make sure i know every inch of this bike and engine. Not even interested in attempting to piece it together and attempt a mock up.

There's gonna be cutting and grinding, sanding and all that... typical stuff. It'll be a long build though, only because winter is inbound O_O and i'll need something to do when I'm hibernating in the barracks. Which also means I don't have a garage. So I'll be working out of my barracks room, my truck/parking lot. I'm removing the rear seat from my truck, and I'll be putting a little wooden platform in there to flatten it out and make it a little work shop/storage area along with underneath my bed, lol.

I'll be updating with pics every so often..

Thanks for looking!

As i picked it up (There is a different seat than pictured)

Just after parking it/chaining it up because the military is a bunch of thieving mofo's.

Thumb Great bike

Are you going to make a Cafe racer?
Got a couple of CB500 and 750 few years back. Great bike and easy to maintain
Good luck bringing the Ole girl back on the road.

Too true! I had dirty socks stolen right out of my boots one night.

Awesome project! I'll be watching to see what you do with it.

Ah yes.. forgot to mention that. Cafe it is!

I'm not doing the change the seat to Cafe style and SHABAM a "Cafe Racer". This thing is going on a diet.. my sawzall and grinder will be getting a workout.

And then when the funds permit, the engine will be all kinds of done up, cam, pistons, etc.. But that's going to be a while!

Thanks!

Yup.. I had my barracks room broken into back in January and everything i owned that was worth something was stolen. From laptop, t.v., xbox to social security card, all the paperwork that was in my drawers, to clothes and even shoes. Even took my bedding and all my harddrives so i have ZERO of all the video and photo's i took in Afghanistan.. I think that pissed me off the most! Everything including military gear was $6k worth of stuff.

And to top it off, someone already tried taking my bimmer. Luckily it was chained up and they only pushed it a few feet out. So, no trust given anywhere on this post!
