r100rs

Hi guys
have a monolever r100rs thats wearing a rt fairing and bars.
I love this bike and have covered many, many miles on it but times are changing!
As much as I love the ease of eating up the miles and staying dry I keep passing tracks and unmade roads (live in Yorkshire, in the pennines) and greenlanes that are pulling me in.
What I would really like to do is adapt my bike for these roads, GS it a bit, but dont need the full works. I have read many threads about doing this but they all seem to be major reworks for serious off roading.
My plan is to lose the fairing, seat, standard silencers, rear end, tyres, tacho and other bits. Re-build with GS bars, high front mudguard, suitable tyres, simple rear guard, simple speedo and maybe rework exhaust to a 2 into 1 with stubby silencer. I cant afford to swap wheels for spoked but maybe could change the front one for a 21"?
All i am aiming for is a lighter, cool looking, easy to throw around road bike with a bit of rough road use.
I realise that many people will say sell it and buy a GS but I know this bike, have a full service history for it and its a very good engine.
Any comments and advise please?

Keep the RS. It'll do most things you ask of it! Not me btw.

If it's got an RT fairing then it's an RT. Just sayin'.

no its an rs

Sorry to be perdantic but its an rs!
the fairing is just a fairing.
The engine is rs more powerful, its got an oil cooler (dont think rt has) and the rs has a different ratio in the rear drive.
I am not an expert and if someone wants to correct me please do.

forget the nay sayers .. it's your bike!

a buddy recently scored a dead airhead with full fairing .. he was going to cafe it, but got swatted down. so instead of gaining an airhead rider, he gave up and sold it and now is back riding vstroms .. yuck .. sure wish he ignored everyone and cafe that airhead.

you need to visit the R80G/S to DRZ 400 front fork thread
http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=978925

one can take a R80ST and convert to G/S by doing above conversion.
yours may not end up the same but you will gain dual sport function.

a 21" front tire will make the bike harder to throw around than a smaller diameter one... GS's and G/S still handle find, but not like a smaller tire road bike.

Hi Treefrog
There are two types of people in this world. Those that say the world is flat and those that say the world is round!

Good luck with your conversion and please post up some pics :)

I guess I'm just saying call a spade a spade. It's just semantics really. The only difference between an RS and RT is the upper fairing and designation on the battery covers (and seat cowl if you have a pre-'88). Engine, gear ratio and everything else is exactly the same. So when you remove those RS uppers you effectively no longer have an RS. It becomes something else...an RT or a naked bike or in your case, perhaps a GS! I have a friend who converted a '95 RT mono to an RS. He calls it an RS!

Of course it's your bike and you can damn well call it whatever you please. I also realize that you have other ideas completely for this bike and I applaud you.

Thanks guys,
Still debating sticking rs parts back on and selling and buying a suitable doner?
Cant decide, in my head i feel that the rs should maybe stay honest, not sure.

Really dig the comments

You may be right, re no difference, I am only going on what I was told by the dealer when i bought it. He told me the rs had higher compression, added oil cooler and slightly different gearing. Also the bevel/crownwheel has different number of teeth (true) to the rt to cope with the greater resistance of the rt fairing. I do know that my bike out pulls my mates rt, slowly leaves it behind!!
Personally as for what its called, the insurance company call it an rs even though I told them it was dressed as a rt.
As far as I,m concerned its just a beemer.
