Fun used car for under 10k

I am looking for a car for the wife. She has a VW beetle, 1.8 turbo, 5speed manual. It is a fun car but I hate working on it. Stupid Germans overengineer everything. It is approaching 140,000 miles and needs to go.
I used to have a 93 Honda civic, it was not nearly as quick but it was really easy to work on. Parts were easy to get and really inexpensive.
The MR2 thread really got me thinking. Have also been looking at the miata's.
An early 90's civic hatch that was owned by an old man and is completely stock would be perfect but I don't think she would go for it.

Any suggestions?

The problem with the MR2 and miata is the lack of cargo room, something like a Ford Focus hatch might be better.

WRX if you don't care about MPG.

Acura RSX Type S could be nice.

For an awesome sleeper a Forester XT 5 speed.....it was faster than the contemporary WRX (mid 13's).

Mazdaspeed 3 if cheap enough.

Those Mazda 3 hatchbacks look pretty nice.

I would like a WRX but getting decent MPG would be nice. She drives 60 miles a day for work.

Sorry, no GTI's, I am done with the European cars.

Regular Mazda3 with a 2.3 and 6sp for a 4dr. Roomy, reliable, reasonably quick and easy to work on.

MR2 cannot be beat for a 2dr. Find a decent one and drive it.

If you can find a Focus SVT in any kind of good condition, I found then to be surprisingly impressive.

MS3 are fun as shit, IMO more fun than the WRXs, less expensive and less complicated.

You can buy a stock Impreza pretty inexpensively and the later ones have 2.5l engines. They are decently quick and get good mpg on regular. A lot of the WRX stuff bolts on so you can get take offs.

There's a guy who goes to the Devens auto cross events in an NA Impreza and he's not far behind the WRX's. I sold my WRX car back stock exhaust to a guy with an NA model for $100 - cheap upgrade for him, the SPT exhaust is around $600.

I put Koni shocks on mine and kept the stock springs: great control without killing me on our lousy snowbelt roads.

The Verdict: If you need or want all-wheel drive, this is the way in.

+1

I had a 2008 2.5i with 5 speed manual. Even stock, it was fun. Some bolt ons easily could have made it even more fun.

I also had a 2001 Impreza 2.5RS with intake and exhaust upgrades. That was a really fun car and can be had for cheap.

I forget what year it was that Subaru addressed the head gasket issue, but I'd look for years after that.

I have heard those are a blast to drive.

I have a 2001 Subaru 2.5RS with cheap intake and exhaust mods. It will easily get 24 mpg if you keep out of the throttle, and stays above 18 even pushing it. While not "fast" by today's standards, it is a fun car. It is also very capable in the snow.

You can find a nice Civic SI for that. Or a super clean low mileage first gen Focus SVT....
