A few years ago I replaced the pump on my Jeep... it had tthe old style pump with the reservoir attached. With the new pump, I had the same problem with intermittently hard steering. Nothing would clear it up, so I took it all apart and inspected everything. There was a little spring loaded valve, really just a steel disk on the return side, right in the pump body, that was not moving freely. I pulled it out and worked the edges down with sand paper until it no longer caught. Once I put everything back together I no longer had rough steering.

Betcha' have a bit of old hose hanging that little valve (if your pump is made remotely the same.).

So apparently there was still some air in the system or some junk lodged somewhere... Drove it for a few days with it randomly stiffening up, but the last three days it has been perfect.

That's a rack & pinion steering, not recirc ball. OP, It's also a failure prone lump of shit. Why it started crapping after you changed the hose, there is no way to know. That return is low pressure, any braided hose will do that's oil resistant, sounds like you got that covered. Be carefull who you buy a recon rack from, lot's of shit out there.
