This trip really started in June of 2006. I took my first trip to Alaska.

Pulling away was hard, leaving the family was hard, everybody realized I wouldn't be around for at least a month except Brian. He was 3 and didn't quite get it. My wife was going to fly up and do some touristy things with me before flying home, but she was extremely worried about something really bad happening.

Every phone call home my time talking to Brian was spent answering his questions about which animals I saw that day. Since the kid could talk it has always been about the animals.

After returning I made a video just like the one in the 1st post.

Brian was hooked. He literally watched the video thousands of times.
Many nights he would watch it over and over until he fell asleep in the chair.

From this point on, he was determined to go to Alaska. His initial plan was to go by himself.
He would ride his power wheels in circles for hours. If you asked him where he was going, the answer was always the same.......Alaska!

When he got a little older he realized that Alaska was out of range of his power wheel. He began to wear me down asking me to take him. I eventually agreed and he made me promise.

At this point I still figured it was just a phase and by the time he was old enough to go he would think better of it.

He never let up. He enjoyed riding the bike but never really experienced a road trip. I wanted him to have some scale to judge a trip to Alaska. When he turned 9 we did a big ride out West including Sturgis, Mt. Rushmore, Devils Tower, Yellowstone etc. He was a trooper, never once complained about long days, heat, cold, rain or any of the other things that you need to be able to deal with on a long trip. After returning I explained that this entire trip would be about 1/2 the distance of a trip to Alaska. He was un-phased.

At this point it was obvious that we were going to Alaska.

I could not quite pull it off for the following summer so we took a trip around the Great Lakes, up to the UP and finally to a destination of his choosing, The International Wolf Center near the Boundary Waters in Minn.

Now there's a great piece for a parenting manual. Kinda beats a 5th grade field trip to the zoo!! Awesome!

My parents once pulled me out of school for six months and we took a road trip visiting all the National Parks in the US.
It changed my life and made me the well rounded person I am today; riding motorcycles cross county, up to Alaska, down to Florida, and loving the work that I get paid to do.
Well done 'Dad'.
