Best Tool Roll / Pouch
I'm looking for the best, most usefull tool roll/pouch to start laying out my tool kit. I was wondering which company seems to make the best design or strongest product. Not looking at something so large I can take my whole shop tool chest, just a very nice design, that is large enough to hold a standard assortment or tools.
I received the tool kit from my bike manufacturer and even tho it's filled with a decent selection of tools, they are all just piled in one big pouch. I know I will be picking up some other specialized tools so I wanted something with a little extra room and compartments to do a little organizing. Any recommendations would be great. Also any one have a link or two to their favorite tool kit or list? I'm looking for something for backcountry/longer travel oriented stuff. I'm sure I'll have to pick and choose when it's all over, but wanted some recommendations to start. Thanks. |

I picked up a 14 pocket tool roll from harbor freight last year when I was setting up my tool kit. It is like canvas on the inside and fake leather on the out, rolls up and ties shut. This past year I got rid of a few tool i no longer need and just cut along one of the pocket stitches to make the roll smaller. I paid like $6 or $7 for it.

Guy in vendors makes whatever you want or can think of in tool rolls, might be worth a try. You pay a little more for the custom thing but worth it to get what you want.

I have several tool rolls, include some high dollar ones.. by far the best one I have found and now sits in my panniers is the bucket boss. The velcro pockets to hold ratchets is outstanding. Plus it is way cheap.. they are all over the place for less than $20.

tool rolls look like a beautiful way to store tools, but when it come to storeing tools on a motorcycle i would take a page out of the manf.'s book and look to a bag... perferably in something that will NOT absorb water. besides not fostering a place where tools rust in darkness, they will pack smaller and can be stored in a lot more places, than a tool roll. my personal fav is a small section of car tire inner tube cut long enought to fold over both ends and then some rubber bands fashioned from the same inner tube, to hold the flap/folds, closed. most tools are not so delicate that they have be isolated from contact from other tools.

+1
The tool roll itself makes the tools twice as bulky. It adds space between everything. Yes they are very nice to work out of, but I don't believe the space compromise is worth it. My tools are in a canvas bag sold as a "screwdriver bag" at Walmart.

A good compromise I've found between usability and bulk is to get a fairly heavy duty ziplock bag. Put tools in that and roll it up tight (done right, it holds the tools as close together as you would get tying them together and it prevents rattling, as well as keeping dirt/water out) and then chuck this a cordura outer-bag.

Which bike you've got?
If you're still lacking the tools, I recommend Motion Pro Trail Tool. You can get it metric or inch-wise. This little baby does about everything and you can add the sockets or tools(torx) you specifically need and they still fit in the pouch which it comes in. It replaces allen, phillips, flathead and the most common socket sizes and even has a bottlecap opener. I got mine on sale and it might be the best 50 euro spent in a while for me. It eats your normal one-by-four sockets so you can fit it with about any tool you want. The pouch is about the size of your regular man's wallet. Check out the vid from adv-spec: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4QMsjjnUzFA (in the vid he has extra sockets which make the zipper a tight closure) I too was looking for a tool roll, and still kinda am, but they do not seem to sell them here, haven't seen a single one being sold in any store. Also it would have to fit below the seat for easy access, and I don't think it would, as the bikes own tool pouch is a tight fit and with the trail tool you really have to play a little jigsaw to get it to fit. So I would have to order it and evaluate the usefulness by pics or vids, which I'm reluctant to do. |
