BlackBerry 10

Yes, I'm the last remaining BB user.

The BlackBerry 10 launch was today, but the US won't be seeing it until March. I'm (over) due for an upgrade, not sure if I'll wait that long or move sideways to the Nokia Winblows phone.

Anyway, highlights from the launch:

  • Z10 touchscreen device, Q10 with a full qwerty.
  • You can run the whole damn thing with your thumb, which I like.
  • The touchscreen keyboard appears more robust than the others I've tried, which I can never get comfortable with.
Early reviews indicate that the camera sucks, they did their own map thing, and other notable apps are missing.

Time will tell whether the devices and OS are worth a shit. I dunno if I'll wait to find out.

In the meantime, they have used their internal fleet of nerds to put out really low budget videos that are amusing to watch, in the same way Portlandia is funny - it hurts a little.

If the news reports are to be believed, the best featue (for me) is the ability to basically have too presences on the phone at once -- one business presence, on personal.

I'm sure data could "leak" from one to the other, and that's not my concern/ineterst -- but being able to maintain two emails, calendars, that would be a benefit to me . . ..

alas, I don't think this will be enough to pull RIM back from the brink.

I too am waiting to see how this new hardware plays out. The company I work for has thousands of Blackberries deployed, and the current 9900 I have plain sucks donkey ballz. We thought we had them convinced to move to Iphones, but our IT geeks are still not comfortable with enterprise security on the apple devices. If this new device is not a huge hit, RIM is done.

Forgot the other parts of the announcement - RIM is now named BlackBerry. And they hired Alicia Keys as their global creative director.

That first part makes sense. I dunno wtf is up with the second thing.

Next to last. The only reason I like the BB is because of the "keyboard." I hate typing on "touchscreens" but love their large screens (like on the Samsung Galaxy III). Once you no longer have the tactile keyboard there's no reason to have a BB. Just my opinion, YMMV.

I have the old 9100 Pearl (I call it the tampon phone) and the paired keys are usable, but more importantly I can run the whole thing with my right thumb using the trackball thing and keyboard shortcuts.

I'm going to have to play with them side by side to decide. FWIW, the Q10 keeps the 'keyboard'.

The Z10 is quite a bit narrower. If the idea is that the touch screen is used to navigate, I'd probably trade the real keyboard away for the ability to run the whole thing with my thumb.

Looks like no new device for me right now... Just got this from the IT nazi's:

To: Employees who use a company-owned or personally-owned BlackBerry
From: Corporate Handheld Policy

A new line of touch screen Blackberry devices, BlackBerry 10 (BB10), is due to be released by RIM and our mobile carriers on January 30.

Please note that the new line of devices is currently under review and evaluation for future deployment, but at this time, the new devices are not operationally ready for Enterprise deployment.
There is no change to support for currently approved BlackBerry devices.

yes, I thought wft when I heard that as well. I guess they want some voice into the arts community to make it more relevant, outside of being a pure "business" phone

I've had to deal with enough of my users having blackberries that I hate them irrationally and passionately no matter the version.

If I pass by something that says blackberry or hear it in passing I immediately start making that noise gollum does when he's hacking up someones toenail.

Not RIM anymore...it's now the Blackberry cie.

They had 2 choices from my POV; stay within their market/target (a good cellphone + email/calendar, nothing more...ok, maybe BBM) or do like everyone else in the crowd (i.e. Toy phones with a shit load of cool apps).

They chose to put themselves in the middle. Bad choice.

Do it good or don't even touch it.

I have a (old) BB myself. No touch screen, QWERTY and the thumb touch thingy only.

Encased into an Otterbox Defender, it's one of the best and rugged cellphone I ever had. Never drop a call, clear and loud and nice signal reception.

Is it the best smartphone? Hell no, no freaking way. But as a cellphone, it's really good.

Probably Rogers (check the 'eh' in his location). Canada gets them early, since RIM - I mean, BlackBerry - is Canadian.

With Android you can have multiple accounts on a single phone.

As a non-IT guy, I have no idea how "safe" they are for enterprise work.

yep, Canuck here...

Both our major carriers offer pre-orders (Rogers & Bell).

I got mine through Bell, but like a prior poster, my employer (IBM) ISN'T ready for it yet, apparently we need more code from Blackberry, in order to integrate with our corp LDAP
