Cylinder inspection (mirror, USB scope)
My R65 was fit for dual plugs by the previous owner. I want to check that they are extending the right amount into the cylinder. Options include $20 USB scope or a telescoping mirror. I don't want to take the jugs off.

Good luck getting the mirror through your spark plug hole.

endo scope kinda works, i've got one. . i only use it look at burn patterns on the tops of pistons...
you need to be able to feel ridges/issues. plus you can't look at the sides of pistons/rings at all with one. take it apart, it's not difficult

My borescope came with a little mirror you can attach to the camera and sort of "look behind". No way I'd put that in a cylinder in case it comes off.
$20.00 for an endoscope, that's worth a try as long as you post some results that would interest me and others. ![]() But....can't you just measure from the outside? All them plugs do have some specs as for total lenght etc in the cataloques and then masuring thread depth in the heads, that's easy enough. I know you do not want the plug threads to extend passed the threads in the heads. May build up carbon and strip the threads when you remove the plugs. Yeah.....been there.

my bad - i assumed you wanted to check condition... you want to see how far a plug goes into the cylinder? just measure it.

should be same as the standard reach plug, you can measure it by grinding a lip on a small metal scale-rule (using the 1 inch line as the point of contact) to engage the far side, read at the plug gasket surface. just looking at the removed plug should give some indication. use the solid gaskets if you need to move it out.dual plugs is questionable of any gain other than the ability to use lower octane fuel.

I've used a piece of wire w/a bend at the end to check
plug bore distance. If a 1/2" reach plug is too short, and 3/4" is a bit too long, one or two added plug washers can make up the difference. I have a USB borescope and it can't be manipulated to see what's necessary. |

Yes...hard to manipulate and even the video camera borescopes are that. I did the usual tests on a BMW engine, all passed. Then stuck the borescope in there and saw too much carbon but nothing untoward in the cylinder walls.
Yeah OK....might as well scrape that carbon out, that's relatively easy on them. Well of course removed the heads also easy on them give me an hour but then I saw the fine scratches in the cylinders that the borescope never showed.Saw the bigger ones when I removed the cylinders. Hum....should have left well enough alone, certainly passed the other tests. ![]() Them pistons/cylinders will make nice targets for the 12 ga.
