Yep, may be an issue. I did, however, check the elevation, and it's no higher than places I've camped in the Blue Mtns at the same time of year. I'm gonna guess its a crap shoot... We'll see when we get there.

Out of the 1200 or so miles I've got in mind, prolly 200 or more of it is on gravel, most of which is occasionally groomed.

A couple people have suggested some alternate routes into the Succor Creek/Leslie Gulch area. It could get interesting.

One-month bump

This is still on with one major adjustment: four days instead of five.
Now May 16-19, Thursday thru Sunday.

Itinerary to include a night each in the Blue Mountains, Leslie Gulch, and Hart Mountain.
Still plan on a fair amount of gravel...

Hmmm... Other thoughts as I think them...

Hey, those dates are looking a little better.

Where are you guys departing from on the 16th? Still looking at sub 300 mile days?

Departure remains Springfield, but we can meet up elsewhere along the way... Redmond, Prineville, ?

I haven't worked out a detailed itinerary yet so exact mileage is still unknown.
Details to follow, but assume maximum mileage/day will be in the neighborhood of 300.

I put the time up on the work Calendar. I have a new boss as of Yesterday, we'll see how that goes over. SWMBO gave me a "Hall Pass" for that weekend also.

Who's in on this deal so far?

Leaving from Springfield works, I could run down there the night before after work, just gotta find a place to camp where I won't get shived in the middle of the night.

I still have it on the calendar as well. Work is uh...lets just say challenging right now. So I'm either going to make a week of it and meet you guys along the way or I won't be able to do it at all.

Details, details...

A proposed route may be viewed here.

Approximate mileage/day:
  1. 235
  2. 290
  3. 255
  4. 325
Route includes fuel at no more than 190 miles between stations.

Expect dry camping and the need to buy/carry water.
Bring a few sticks of firewood, if you can.

Meals are on your own, unless a chef steps up.

More as I think of it...

Looks like a great route to me. I haven't toured around southern Oregon at all, so it's all new to me. I do hunt around Silver Lake area, and Thompson Reservoir, but been decades since I've been east of there.

Mountain House works for me, plus the normal stops to support the local economies. I tend to over pack a bit, so not sure I can realistically carry much wood.

So what are you planning on riding, Scott? Your KLR? I thought you had a GS...

I also tend to overpack ("never unprepared" is the clan motto), but I'm getting it figured out a bit with every trip. Like, just because there's no water at any of the campgrounds doesn't mean I need to carry two or three gallons from day 1...

This looks like an ideal ride for the GS. Don't mind good gravel roads and short stretches of forest roads, but not interested in technical riding while loaded on the GS. Will most likely be running Tourances. 2-300 miles is great for the GS, but a little long for me on the smaller bikes. Much more than 350 miles or so makes for a LONG day on any bike.

I carry a water filter vs. lots of water. Of couse that only works when you have some source of water TO filter. For this trip, probably will carry a Dromedary bag with a litre or two. Other gear decisions may wait until I can see the weather report. Hoping I can leave the snowshoes at home! The bigger tent, thicker pad and winter bag may be in order for this trip still though.

V-Duck, I'm planning to give this ride another shot after my day-one DNF last year. The problem turned out to be a loose wire connector on the fuel pump that decided that particular corner outside of Oakridge was a good place to pull free.

Anyway the bike got a good shakedown later last summer on the Montana 1000 which was more like 2000 miles when you include getting there and back from Portland. All systems are go now!

Okay put me on the in list again. I was signed up to join you guys last year but came down with a nasty gastrointestinal infection just prior to the ride so I had to back out. Right now the bike and I are in great shape and hoping it lasts this time. I will probably meet up with you either in Prineville or at the first nights camp spot. I have to double check your route and see where the best spot to meet will be.
