Thinking of camping at Chaco Canyon June 20

Will it be filled with hippies and new-agers who are there for the summer solstice sunrise on June 21?

Heading to Ouray the third week of June and trying to hash out the details of the trip. Have always wanted to check out Chaco. I just realized that I "could" be there on June 20 and catch the Solstice Sunrise on June 21 before heading up to Ouray.

Not really interested if the campground will be full, since I'll be on the bike and don't want to ride all the way in there just to get turned away for camping.

Any thoughts from you folks out there in Northern New Mexico?

I've never been down there for the solstice but I have never seen an influx in the area at that time. I couldn't imagine that campground getting filled up.

Thanks. Never been there, and the .gov website mentions limited first come first serve camping.

Any other feedback will be appreciated.

It's def worth seeing, I think it was the largest building on the North America as late as the 1600s.

If it has been raining, the roads in and out (whether from the south or north) will be horribly muddy. And there's a lot of miles of dirt roads to get to Chaco. In June it's more of a day to day, or even hour to hour, thing than a seasonal thing.

Yeah, I know the general area from several trips over the years, just never been down to Chaco.

Planning on accessing the park from US-550. That appears to have the least dirt. 13 of the 21 miles are unpaved, according to the .gov website

It is well worth seeing. The road is fine unless it rains alot. The campground can fill up but there is overflow, but that is just camping on the road. Bring everything you need as there is not much there as I re-call. But have not been there in awhile, it may have changed. I also enjoy Hwy. 550 as it is 4 lanes of NM bliss.

Well, I'm booked in Ouray for June 21/22/23 for a little Guzzi get-together.

So, unless it's raining or it's 100-degrees, I'm camping at Chaco on June 20.
