I think I need a new TV

I have a 50" Toshiba DLP set, it's been great but in the last couple days the colors have gotten messed up sometimes and the screen "flickers"
Orange/red is the worst, seems like it flares.

It's about 8 years old I think, (maybe 9) got it when the DLP tvs were first out. It has a lot of hours on it.

Expert opinions please. Time for a new one or does this one have a fixable issue?

Whats good right now without costing as much as a good used bike?

when the big sets started showing up I did all the research and my first 2 50" sets cost between 2-3K each, I had dlp with led light source ect. but they only lasted 5 years or so. my old sony Trinitron lasted 15 years or more, that's when 25" was big. now I buy whatever 50"sets walmart has on sale for about $400. I run 2-50" sanyo tv 's side by side, one is the computer monitor and the other is sat. tv and blue ray player. if I only get a few years its no big deal, anyway my eyesight is not what it was

Don't make them like ......

8 years old and needs to be replaced or repaired?

We have two TVs, both purchased around 1984, both 19" and still working fine. One has a mechanical tuning knob, since it has always been hooked to a cable box it has never been changed from channel 3 (might kill it to try at this point).

I am interested in what is recomended if you need to replace yours. Our Mitsubishis have been great but it is unlikely that anyone still works there that had a hand in building our sets so we will be starting off new if we decide to upgrade.

Get SniperX's attention. TV's and electronic gizmos is his thing. I think there might be a thread about new ones around here somewhere as well. Not sure Sniper is in the repair field, but definitely knows his way around a showroom full of high end stuff.

I'm not mad about the 8 years part, tube tvs last longer than the DLP sets.

And my uncle has replaced his plasma twice since I bought this, and they cost double what mine did.

We have a 20" Sony Trinitron that is at least 15 years old. Still looks ok.

Nine chances out of ten, it won't be worth repairing. Decide on a budget and start looking. It doesn't sound like technical spec will be important to you. There are a lot of good TVs out there that aren't too expensive.

I'd like to spend $2-3K on a new tv, don't think I will tho.

Wife turns the tv on in the morning, watches it VERY little but it's on all day as long as someone is home

I watch tv very little, wanted a good picture for home theater and this tv had a great picture.
Not overly bright, looked awesome with a good source.

Now I don't care as much, so I'm looking at tvs that are 50-60" at under $1K.

This one went off the deep end this morning and the picture was awful, colors all over the place.
Have a spare 32" sitting in it's place now and I feel like I'm going blind

Last time I took an electronic device in for repair (several years ago), they quoted
me a $150.00 fix it limit. Anything over that, and they wouldn't touch it. With the
prices on TV's, DVD players, etc... the way they are now, I'd be surprised anyone
is in the electronics repair biz..

WVhillbilly -

I just picked up a Samsung 55" Plasma for less than $700 recently. Keep your
eye on the sales at the major retailers, sometimes you get lucky.

Been watching the sales at Best Buy, it's about the only choice in this area.

Well, if it's on all day get an LED LCD model in the 50"-60", 120-240hz refresh rate at a price under $1k. If you can't find one for that you're not looking.

They use the least amount of juice, generate the least amount of heat and are light enough to hang almost anywhere.

Best Buy is a bit of a mess, do you have a Costco nearby? They aren't always the cheapest but if anything goes wrong they stand by what they sell and I'm sure a local inmate will go in with you if you don't have a membership.

Also beware of even the brands you know since many don't mean much anymore. A lot of the TV's come from the same big manufacturers so an RCA might be the same as an off brand.

Samsung is a big name and they have price tags to go with it. Personally I like the Vizios my family has a lot (4 in total), the last purchase I made was a 39" 1080P smart TV. I actually got a 47" RCA TV initially for the same price but it was huge for the room and the quality just wasn't there in the picture as well as the ports which had some that didn't work.

The other thing is don't trust ANY brand, each one will have good and bad TV's so run the product number on your smartphone and go through the reviews.

Also at the store their settings usually suck and sometimes will run SD content so what you see there might be far from the actual quality of the set.

Edit: If you care about absolute blacks this is what you'll pay a lot for. On the Vizio the blacks are a lot better than the Hanspree (off brand) I had from 2010 and if there's any light on in the room it looks great. When it's completely dark except for the TV you'll see a little but of light through it though.

You don't need a membership card to shop at costco.

Just a costco gift card.

But as far as I remember they only accept cash, debit or Amex. (I always use the Costco Amex card so I don't remember).

I think they still double the manufacturers warranty.
