Musing of letting a KTM in the woodshed

Since I boldy go places where I am sure a lowered F650 shouldn't go, I decided last year to get a full up set of Woody's Wheel Works excel rims including abs ring, rotors, and rear sprocket. Life was good.

Anyhow, fast forward to this year and I need to replace the chain and sprockets. Since the stocker BMW hub has known issues where it eats bearings, Woody has custom made the KTM/BMW adapter to the KTM rear hub.

Anyhow, I order the SuperSprox replacement a month or two ago without really looking at it. Today, I decide to at least start the change of sprockets. The Woody's receipt indicates to buy the replacement sprocket for the KTM 990 Adventure.

And this is what I get: SuperSprox RST-899-42

But this is what I have installed SuperSprox RST-990-42.

So, made a few phone calls. Supersprox was uber helpful, and the RST-990-42 uses an countersunk 8mm bolt and is for a 520 chain. But the beemer runs a 525 chain. That's been a good run for that sprocket with the wrong pitch (15K miles!)

Call Woody's and send him a few pics. Seems I should be running the RST-899-42 which is for the 525 chain. But the correct sprocket has 10mm bolt holes, so now I need a new sprocket carrier too which has 10mm bolt holes.

However, I'll give Woody's props for owning up to the mistake and comping me the correct carrier and bolts a year later at no charge.

Moral of story (I think): A dash of KTM never improved a Beemer

sounds like a good recommendation for Woody's

I've found the folks at Woody's to be great. They are very helpful and do first rate repair work.

A couple of years ago I was going a bit too fast on a remote road late in the day as the sun set and limited my view of a series of potholes (or at least that's my story) and as a result I hit the potholes and bent the front alloy wheel of my GS in three places. I was lucky to have a spare tube (just in case, for a tubeless tire) and the wheel rolled for another few thousand miles until Woody's made it round again.

15 K miles with an alternate chain is a good experiment. It should be useful information to someone somewhere.

road conditions web site

I found this helpful web site for updated road conditions.
It also has rest stops and gas stations/food icons that can be user selected.

And the weather should be much cooler.

Heading north from DC it will likely cool off 8-10 degrees every 500 miles we travel north this time of year. It is hard to imagine that we can leave the heat behind.

pre order food. good idea

I'll send an email request to Christoph for our dining 'needs'.

I found both Christoph and Julie to be super helpful.

You may have noted Julie's suggestion to check the road report as the James Bay road was closed for a week last month because of fires. Very helpful.

I guess we could have been on the up side of that closure too. How many times could we ride the TT in a week?

With the potential for rain tomorrow AM, I will probably get the track set finalized. I've updated the maps on our GPSs. I will email Lakota and Keith with the GPX files, excel spreadsheet and printable maps.

Also, thinking about reservations for Chibougamau? I only find 3 places: Motel Harricana, Hotel Motel Nordic, Hôtel Chibougamau,.

None have fab ratings

Keith...your G4's have been updated, although I had to go back to Windows 7 for some reason to complete the task.

Thank you for the update!

Thank you for the update. We should be able to communicate between the four of us if I read the advertising right.

I can just imagine our conversations......turn here, no there, no maybe over there..... Can we stop at Tim Horton's? I need an espresso.....

How long do the batteries last?

:-)

request went in for meals

I sent an email request for meals to Christoph at Mirage but have not heard back yet. I'll ping him perhaps on Monday or Tuesday.

I think making reservations in Chibougamau is a good idea. We can change as needed with sufficient notice. I'm happy to make these if y'all like. Any preference for which of the three places? Maybe I should collect up some data e.g. cost ?

We have linked four riders before without issue but you need to watch the order in which you ride versus linked order. I am all about stopping at Timmy's! Dana and I can usually get between ten and twelve hours out of a charge. The plan this year is that when we stop for and extended period of time we are going to charge them on the bike so we can get a bit more out of them if needed.
