Kindle Fire HD ?

I ordered one for my wife for Valentines day, she loves to read but is pretty computer illiterate. (I'll get her some chocolate too.....)

I went with the larger one, the small ones look pretty small.

I've never owned a tablet, are these pretty user friendly for a novice?

Notice I ask AFTER I ordered it?

Doh.....

I returned mine after a week. It was laggy, really laggy. Like trying to type a URL and it would pause 3-4 seconds a few times. It became extremely frustrating.

Other than that, it was great. I really enjoyed reading electronic magazines on it but I'll wait until that issue is resolved.

I have the regular basic kindle. I love it for what it is.

Almost all the tablets get mixed reviews. I think that the tech is still new enough that you can get a "good one" or a "bad one".

I say if she doesn't like it, return it and try something else.

Crocker - was that a new HD or the older kindle fire?

My Kindle Fire was a turd until I reflashed the OS with base android, then it was awesome.

Out of the box, the kindle fire HD was exponentially faster and much better user experience, though it still lacks the Android App store. The lack of the app store lead to a return, though the device felt fine.

When it comes to reading, I'm on my third regular kindle, which I own alongside the fire. For reading, there's just no comparison.

Did you watch the same commercial I did? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XtJBQHLdcM4

I haven't tried the hd, but the kindle fire worked well enough. For a novice, they are user friendly and functional. She'll be happy with the purchase as long as she isnt a techy.

Thanks to all.

She's sure NOT a techy, just wants to read and maybe browse a bit.

Now it looks like it might not make it in time. I ordered it Wed and chose the free shipping because it said "IN STOCK" and thought surely they could get it here in 8 freaking days.

My email confirmation yesterday says by Sat.the 16th......

I'm going to remain positive.

You should call Amazon Customer Service right now - explain this is for your wife for Valentine's.

See what they can do.

It was the 8.9" Fire HD.

I was severely disappointed. Maybe I just got a bum one with bad software.

My girlfriend got one for Christmas and it's great. However, we were both unimpressed at first because we were trying to use it like we would use a computer - by doing everything through a web browser. As soon as we found out that the key was downloading and using apps, everything clicked and we started really liking the thing. She doesn't have a smart phone, and I don't really use mine for anything but phone calls, so we were both pretty unfamiliar with the whole "app" thing.

My wife has a Kindle Fire and loves it. She's a semi computer geek and is always looking for new things to do with it.

Across the top of your screen it says "Shop Games Apps Books Music. . . etc." I was clicking on "web" and surfing the web for everything. Instead of doing that, click on "Apps" and search the app store for apps that might interest you. For example, on my laptop I use Pandora and Facebook on the web. That didn't work well on the Kindle. Instead, go to the app store and download the free Pandora and Facebook apps and use them. My girlfriend downloaded the Pinterest app. The apps are optimized for the touch screen interface and they make things much easier, plus they look a lot better on the small screen.
