AZ bike week!

Well, it's started. I was out today doing errands on my bike. Was surprised at how many bikes were on the roads, then it hit me (AZ bike week)! My first clue was all the out of state plates. Then, virtually no-one was wearing any gear; then, the women/chicks on the back were wearing even less (gear), shorts, tank tops and maybe sandals. My fourth clue was that some of them were using the left turn lane to get ahead of the massive back-ups that they were causing. LOL!

I love that there are so many enthusiasts (mostly Harley riders). I don't even begin to understand the mentality, wish them well, but fear that some will die during this week.

They make for interesting riding for sure, and they glare at you when you pass them. Sorry if I don't feel like riding 15 - 20 mph under the limit for 20 mi at a time.

In their defense: If I were wearing only sunglasses as my safety gear and had my wife/girlfriend on the back in shorts, halter and sandals, I'd probably ride pretty slowly too. An informal poll (taken by me) indicates about 3% wear helmets. Actually saw one dude in ATGATT! I've also noticed that about 5% will acknowledge a wave, most simply ignore the gesture. Almost all riders of other make bikes will acknowledge a wave, or will wave first, which I try to return. A group of three this afternoon all waved first, startled me, but I did return it. Then there was the pirate in the lane next to me at a light. He glanced at me, I at him and we both nodded! Progress! Truthfully, on the few times where I've stopped at a "gathering" or a restaurant where they're eating, most of them are very friendly. Maybe it's because I ride an old Beemer and not a rice burner. LOL!

Well, at least one down. Very bad car/bike accident at the corner of Union Hills and Cave Creek yesterday afternoon. Impossible to tell from the helicopter video footage who was at fault or what exactly happened. Rider who was helmetless was taken to trauma center with life threatening injuries. Woman cager was treated at the scene. Bike was a smoldering mess, being hosed down by firemen. Sure hope he makes it and learns something from the experience. There's a video on azcentral.com under Phoenix if anyone wants to see the aftermath.

Ah, good ol' bike week. I have noticed the increase of out-of-state riders even in semi-B.F.E. during this time; and while I don't agree with the lack of motorcycle gear that most wear during this time (even with the weather being as nice as it is, I am okay with it if they're riding their own ride and ride like a good rider should.

However, I have noticed more people wearing Helmets/Jackets/Pants/Gloves/Boots around this time than I do in the actual summertime.

I was in Cave Creek a few weeks ago. I noticed a lot more helmets too. Still, not the majority, though.

Very bad news. The 20 yo rider of the motorcycle died. The woman who was driving the car, 84yo, turned left in front of him. The young man was not wearing a helmet.

A motorcyclist died after a car tried to make a left turn in front of the motorcyclist at Cave Creek Road and Union Hills Drive in Phoenix Wednesday, officials said.
Police responded to a serious injury collision at the intersection of Cave Creek Road and Union Hills Drive around 4 p.m., Sgt. Steve Martos, a spokesman for the Phoenix Police Department said. Police were told that a motorcyclist was down and his motorcycle was on fire.
The motorcyclist, Angelo Wright, 20, was taken to a nearby hospital where he died of injuries, Martos said.
The police department’s Vehicular Crimes Unit responded to the scene and determined that an 84-year-old female driver of a Volkswagen Rabbit, was heading east on Union Hills and tried to make a left turn at Cave Creek Road to travel north, Martos said.
The driver failed to yield to Wright, who was riding a Harley Davidson motorcycle, and collided with him.
Wright was not wearing a helmet

My Cop buddies tell me the over/under is 15 motorcycle related fatalities this year. What amazes me is all of the bikes at the "gatherings" and it seems everyone is drinking alcohol.

I always look for the largest throng of pirates and park the Triumph right in the middle
