Looking at 2012 990. Good price?

Hi all. I'm looking at my first dual sport/adventure bike. I'm coming from sportbikes, I no longer race and got sick of riding our looooong, straight roads here in Texas!

Love the reported offroad capabilities of the KTM 9XX series though also considering the Triumph Tiger (less $$$) and Duc Multi (read they're close to sportbike performance). I'll be riding some two up, definitely hitting the very few dirt roads we have in the area and wanted to romp on it a few times.

I rented a Vstrom 650 in Denver and while I loved the idea found it an absolute slow turd. Especially two up. I've owned the lighter brother, SV650.

Going to look a KTM 990 Adv. with 6600 miles on the clock. Dealer asking $13K, said it's in great shape. Only add ons is a full, dual Remus exhaust. Thoughts?

i am in the market myself, and seeing real prices of 10,9k for 2010, 11,5~11,9k for 2011 and 12,5k for 2012, all new.

personally, i would not buy a used one for 13k.

Thats to much money for that bike. Even on ebay $12,999 for a new 2012 bike

I love my 2012 990R but based on what you have written, I'd either wait for the new one of get a multistrada. It does not appear you will be off-roading enough to appreciate what the Adventure has to offer, particularly the "R".

As KTMADV said,, That's too much for a used 990. I paid that for a new 990R. + tax of course. I think I got one hell of a deal though.

As an owner of a Super Tenere, I agree with ColoradoBigfoot, If you don't have access to a good amount of off pavement riding I'd opt for a different scoot. Don't get me wrong, I love my 990, it's a fantastic bike and in the dirt is when you realize how good this bike really is. But when riding miles of pavement I prefer the big Yammi over the KTM.

Good luck finding the right bike. Ride as many different ones as you can before choosing the one that trips your trigger. There are so many good choices out there, it's no wonder so many riders own more than 2.

Too much I'd say, but these bikes are not exactly easy to come by. Depends how much you want that bike.

Test ride as many bikes as can, I thought about the tiger as well, it's a good bike. I ride mostly road and I love my 990, it's made for everything and that's the bottom line. You can ride it like a race bike around curves, hop curbs or ride technical trails if your good enough. Take your time it's a big investment, just make sure you find the bike that puts the big grin on your face

Got my brand new 2011 out the door for $12.5. In CA. Shoot for 11.2 or so plus tax.

agree, high price for that steed. You want the 9xx or the Triumph, if you want to actually go off road. The Multi is fastest, but not a off roader, esp with those 17" wheels. All my friends have thumpers & I take my big Katoom where ever they can go! & I can hang with sportbikes in the twisties

Test road the KTM and the new Tiger Explorer back-to-back. She's never ridden and is 6' so I expected a struggle but both bikes accelerated great with us, no issues in turns, etc. The KTM was much better at blocking wind and felt like it had a smaller footprint/presence. The Tiger was nice. Never rode a shaft drive-uber smooth and opens a world of sexual innuendo on the ride lol. She was comfortable on both.

The KTM gave me some of those "warm & fuzzys" haha so I'm leaning that way. They have a Multi but ran out of time. Not sure the Multi is worth the extra $$ but I'll ride before dismissing.

Regarding pricing-I think I'll assume the dealer's prices are marked up at least $1k. Seems to be a trend because the same 2007 Tiger listed $5900 on Craiglist is now being sold by a (different) dealer for $8300!!!

There is a 2012 Adventure 990R with about 100 dealer miles for sale at a Texas dealership . I got him to 14k otd with only a phone call.
