Pacific Coast 800 thoughts?

Hey guys, new member here! I have been an avid dirt bike rider and street bike rider for years, however I have wanted to take a couple long cross country type road trips. I don't think my CBR1000RR would be comfortable for long so I have been looking for something I can stand to ride for hours at a time. A buddy of mine has a 1989 Honda Pacific Coast 800 with around 20,000 miles. It has been repainted do to a small accident it suffered but seems to be fixed correctly and still retains a clean title. It is missing a couple small pieces from the bodywork here and there but nothing major at all. He is asking $1500. Does this sound like a fair price for a bike in this condition and age? Also is the PC800 a good bike if I am looking to ride across half of the United States or should I be looking for something else? How is parts or accessories availability for these bikes?

I'd suggest taking a ride on it to amke sure it fits you OK, and that you don't hate it for some reason. But that would be a great choice from a practical and functional standpoint if it's in good mechanical condition.

I passed on a fairly used one for $1200 at a local dealer. Kept second guessing myself and by the time I decided to go for it, it had been sold.

I bought a banged-up 1990 PC800 2 years ago with 31k on the clock and needing new tires and the fork seals replaced for $2500. I think $1500 is a good deal for only 20k miles.

They are good bikes, and I think quite comfy. I commute daily on mine and have done 500 miles in a day with no real complaints. The trunk rocks and you can fit a lotta shit in there. No chain maintenance!

If that deal came by my way, i'd buy it fo sho.

They can be a pain to work on due to the tupperware, but on the upside they are very very low maintence and considered to be as reliable as anything ever built. Storage is good, looks are polarizing...I want to like them but can't muster it. If I had a cbr1000rr to look at and the pc800 to ride I could probably deal with that lol.

Do make sure it fits you and you're not dealing with buffeting or anything of that nature. There is some aftermarket for it, but it's relatively small being an older fairly small market bike. Ones in really good shape usually bring strong money, $1500 for one that is mechanically sound and not a train wreck sound like it's likely a good price. Best of luck.

it sounds like a fair price to me. The PC800 is a great bike to take a trip on, if it is in good shape mechanically. 20,000 miles is nothing. Your biggest problem will be the availability of parts. The PC never sold in big numbers, and has been out of production for a long time. You may want to check ebay and your local honda dealer to see if you can get things like brake pads, spark plugs and filters.

There is probably a PC owners forum somewhere out there that would be your best source of info.

If I was looking for a $1500 bike, I would love to find a PC800 in good shape.

With the exception of body plastics, parts are no harder to find than any other 90's Honda...ie, Tucker Rocky and Parts Unlimited have plenty of oem stuff available and ebay always has parted bikes.

One thing you should check on that bike is for oil leaks. These motors have hard rubber cam plug caps that dry up over time and need replaced. I lived with a few post-ride drips for a year or so before I replaced mine. It's not an expensive or particulalrly hard job for the DIY-inclined, but you do have to remove some plastics, airbox, carbs, and a few other parts to get to the heads. It could be pricey if you take it to a dealership for this.

Thanks for the quick replies guys. I understand the PC800 is definitely lacking in the looks and performance department... especially if it is sitting next to my CBR. I am just looking for a cheap bike to put tons of miles on and not have to worry about reliability or discomfort. I am going to take a good second look at it and try to get a ride around the block on it. My main concern for aftermarket is maybe adding backrests (if the girlfriend rides with) and possibly more storage. I would love to own a gold wing, but being a college student and trying to buy a house wouldn't allow my budget to purchase one.

I was hunting one when I ended up with a Harley by mistake. :-)

The PC800's I was finding were rougher than I wanted. Oddly, didn't fit me nearly as well as I'd expected either. I was finding customizing them to fit me to be quite challenging and expensive.

Still like the bike and think it's quite neat. Love the concept, don't mind the looks.

You can Metzeler ME880s on it and just put gas and oil in it like a car for 20k miles.

That is its most (only?) appealing attribute.

just went for a 280 mile ride last weekend with a friend who got one for his wife to ride. When asked if she was doing ok she said yes but we weren't going fast enough.
So on the way home we were riding about 80 and she did just fine.

+1 on the cavernous trunk and reliability etc. $1500 is cheap if it is in good condition as they go for twice that around here.
